The buzz from the hub

Welcome to our September 2018 newsletter!

This month, we look back on last month’s successful Wildflower Plant Sale, update the latest on our Iron Age log boat project, and give a run down of our upcoming workshops and events.

Native Scottish wildflower Plant Sale

Thanks to everyone for making this year's plant sale such a success!

Staged on the last Sunday of August, the event showcased the fabulous selection of wildflower plant specimens grown over the summer in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

Attracting plant-lovers from all over the city, the sale raised around £260 for granton:hub - no mean feat considering many of our plants were made available for only £1.

With the garden team on-hand to provide invaluable growing advice, visitors were also able to sample soup made from produce grown here at granton:hub, along with freshly-baked bread courtesy of Bread In Fife’s Colin Lindsay.

It was a lovely day made extra special by all those who made it along, but don’t worry if you missed it - our drop-in gardening sessions run every Wednesday morning, rain or shine.

If you’d like to source a particular plant or would like to discuss our grow-on-demand service, why not come along, or drop us an email at wildflowers@grantonhub.org

The Iron Age Team wants you to join them every weekend!

Our Iron Age boat builders need you!

Our Iron Age boat team are looking for more volunteers to help out in their continuing mission to turn nine metres of tree trunk into a seafaring logboat.

Using a gutsy mix of raw determination and historically accurate hand tools, the team is currently finishing the bow so that the log can be flipped over and work can begin on hollowing out the hull.

It's a hands-on opportunity calling for enthusiasm, practical skills and as little or as much time as you can spare, but there is plenty of room for those who’d like to drop in and help.

Part of a unique collaboration between The School of Ancient Crafts and the Madelvic History Group, the group meets every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm, and all you need to do is bring protective boots and lunch! Training in basic axe handling will be provided as well as gloves and safety specs.

See more about what the team have been up to in this clip.

Connect with Granton:hub at North Edinburgh Arts’ volunteering showcase

granton:hub is taking part in a special volunteering showcase on Thursday September 27 at North Edinburgh Arts Centre.

Organised by North Edinburgh Arts and Volunteer Edinburgh, the event presents a great opportunity for people interested in volunteering to find out more about the kind of opportunities on offer with community charities and organisations.

We’re also hopeful our presence there will increase awareness of granton:hub with potential volunteers and the rest of the community in North Edinburgh.

Doors open to the public at 3pm and the event runs until 6pm.

Letterpress Printing Workshop
