Why We Celebrate

We celebrate Church of the Reconciler because it is a place where privileged communities and lower income communities can come together in fellowship to destroy the misinformation and stereotypes that keep us apart.  When we visit Sunday School classes throughout our Conference we explain that the most helpful thing you can give to our ministry is your time. Just coming to our church and engaging our community in conversation is what we need most.  These conversations lead to positive, supportive relationships that provide self-esteem and develop self-worth which is often what launches the journey to an abundant life with Jesus Christ.  I made this invitation to a Sunday School class shortly after a news story blamed gunfire on our ministry.  Two days later a mother and her two year old son show up to talk with our community.  The first community member she met was a man named Tony.  They introduce themselves and Tony realizes that her son is holding a toy car.  So Tony goes into his bag and finds a matchbox car that he gives to the young child. The following Sunday the woman returns to the church with her entire family to worship with us.  Her two sons are eager to find Tony because they want to give him a toy motorcycle.  This may not seem significant to you but it was to Tony.  He found me before I left on Sunday and he told me something incredible happened.  He told me about seeing the woman and her family again and said that the young boys had given him something.  Then he smiled real big and took the motorcycle out of his pocket.  We celebrate Church of the Reconciler because God uses this place to reveal that lower income communities are neither lazy nor prone to violence; instead, they are extraordinarily generous and want to be a part of your life.

We hope you will join us on October 18 at Birmingham First United Methodist Church for a night to Celebrate the amazing people who are part of the Reconciler community. We will begin at 5:30 with appetizers and a silent auction to be followed by dinner at 6:30. You will have a chance to hear from our new Reconciler choir, learn more about the ministries of Church of the Reconciler, and hear stories from people who have been impacted by the work we do. Tickets are $50/person or $500/table. You can buy both individual tickets or a table on our website at www.churchofthereconciler.com or by sending a check to Church of the Reconciler with “banquet” marked in the memo section.
