News from the Farm
October 2018

Dear farm friends and CSA members -

Storage space in the barn is filling up! As bulk harvest season continues, we are bringing in onions, squash, garlic, potatoes and more to keep for the winter. Growing food year-round in New England requires lots of planning ahead, sturdy greenhouses, and tools like row cover to keep beds warm as temperatures drop. We continue production year-round, including raising livestock which means we can provide a full organic diet from the farm regardless of season.

Late fall has often the most bounty on our farm so remember the growing season isn't over!!

We wanted to thank everyone who has bought shares & memberships to support the farm this season. Our CSA members help make the farm possible! Find information about Winter Share sign ups below.

p.s. We are in the northeast organic farming paper! If anyone is interested you can find a paper copy of the Natural Farmer in the farm store and the online version should be coming soon.

>> Winter CSA Sign Ups Due November 1st!!

We have been out in the fields harvesting storage crops & planting winter greens this fall! Each week our farmers spend a day in the kitchen preserving the last of 2018 harvests into food for us all to enjoy this winter season. Find some highlights for winter shares this year below & dates for all our pick ups.

This year we grew corn for both cornmeal & a special variety cultivated for flavor and best as polenta: Floriani Red Flint Corn.

We have a good supply of garlic, an extra greenhouse for growing winter / early spring greens & will have more preserves than past years - including berry spreads, sauces, grains + flours, ferments and a nice selection range of frozen produce (like ginger) & products.

Our sweet potato yields were excellent which means more veggie burgers and beautiful, healthy sweet potatoes all winter. Also favorites like celeriac honey nut winter squash!

Community Supported Agriculture or CSAs are a way for people to become more engaged with where their food comes from. Our CSA members play a critical role in making the farm sustainable: payments made to the farm in the winter and spring help us pay for seeds, labor, and other costs during the beginning of the growing season. In return, CSA members are ensured a share of the harvest during the season at a reduced cost. Our CSA members are the foundation of this farm.

Visit us in the farm store or at the farmer's market to sign up. You can also sign up online and find more information about our CSA on our website: https://www.freedomfoodfarm.com/our-csa
