Fundraising Phase Two

Dear <<First Name>>,

Phase One is now complete: thanks to your generosity and merit-making, we raised nearly £190,000. This combined with a mortgage has meant we can now purchase our building in Leeds. Rejoice!

Phase Two we're launching today: the internal space. We're looking to raise £100,000 to create the cafe, living area, gompa and alterations to the building. Read below for the details.

With Love from Kerry and all at Jamyang Leeds

Phase Two: The Work Inside Begins

We need your help to create:
  • Cafe and Kitchen on the ground floor
  • Repairs to ceiling tiles and carpet
  • Accessibility for all
  • Creating a living space for live-in volunteers including a guest bedroom for teachers
  • Extending into the warehouse space for a larger gompa (meditation room)
  • Complying with building regulations
  • A new library and chill-out area

This phase is all about the office side of the building. Below is our initial plans which we're also submitting to the council today for planning permission. It shows the office side and how we intend to use it.

Timeline: we aim to complete the sale by the end of 2018. Then work on the internal refit January-March 2019. Grand opening April 2019.

Your support will enable us to create an oasis of meditation and study for a whole generation. The local community will get benefit, as will the wider Buddhist community. Please consider supporting us - we need you!

How You Can Help

(1) Merit-Making

This is the key to any success. We were recommended to recite Tara Praises and to do Tara and Medicine Buddha practices.

Pledge to recite Tara prases here
Pledge to recite Tara mantras here
Pledge to recite Medicine Buddha Mantras here

At the centre we'll also keep organising these practices so as a group we can create merit.

(2) Donate

Today we launched our GoFundMe site where you can make donations, including gift-aid, which will help us raise the funds needed. You can also subscribe to mini-updates and download the app!

View the new GoFundMe site here:
https://www.gofundme.com/buildingacommunity-jbcl

Or you can simply make a bank transfer, or use our website to make a donation.

Our aim is to raise £100,000. Any money collected will only be used for the new building. Should the sale of the property not complete for any reason, the funds will be kept for the next building we find for our new home.

(3) Create a Fundraising Event

Since our last campaign you've been creative with your fundraising: in the last year alone you helped with auctions, selling home-made items, Wellbeing Days, guess the smarties, market stalls, and as a centre, we ran events such as 24-hour sutra marathon and yoga classes. Give you any ideas? Contact us if you'd like help with a fundraising idea.
Other Building Updates
  • Feng Shui Monk Ven. Jampa Lhudrup came and assessed the property at the beginning of September and liked what we'd decided to put where. He advised to build into the warehouse and make a bigger gompa (see plans above) and a few minor changes such as front door type, installing a fountain and where to put offices.
  • This weekend we're submitting change of use planning to the council, thanks to our wonderful architect Max Comfort (cool name huh!). Max came to see the site a few months ago.
  • We're sorting out a bridging loan to cover the VAT on the sale (£80,000). Details aren't clear yet, one possibility is looking for someone we know to loan the money for the few months we'd need it. We can claim most of this back in the first VAT return, the first 4 months.
  • Survey still needs doing: the bank did their survey last week and we're getting a copy of that soon.
  • We were sorry to hear about the recent passing of Lama Monlam who was recommended by Lama Zopa to perform pujas at the new building. We sent best wishes to his family and dedicated for his onward journey at our medicine buddha puja this week. We're awaiting advice from Lama Zopa on what next...
  • Project manager Kerry Prest, will now be spending 3 out of his 4 days at JBCL managing the move. At least for the next 6 months. Kerry is hoping to meet Lama Zopa in Germany in November to show him the project in person and to request him to officially open the centre with a visit and teachings :)

How Did It All Happen So Fast?

No-one expected things to move so quickly after just 2 years, but one of Buddha Tara's qualities is "The Swift Pacifier".

You helped us purchase the 21 Tara statues after the advice from Dagri Rinpoche, and again he said in his recent visit to rely on this practice. Lama Zopa Rinpoche also recommends that we rely on Tara and Medicine Buddha.

So please keep reciting!

Mala of Merit

"A way of donating a significant amount in an affordable way"

Many thanks to those who have already been contributing to this scheme. We have the mala's already, and they are due to be blessed in the next few months.

A mala is a string of either 21 or 108 beads used in Tibetan Buddhism to count prayers or mantras. If you can pledge to donate for a small or large mala, you'll receive a unique mala blessed by a very special lama, as well as knowing you supported our new building campaign in a significant way.
