Wild is the music of autumnal winds amongst the faded woods -- William Wordsworth

A note from Joanne
I've always loved autumn. Something about the color of the sky, the cool nights, the orange glow of the maple trees... And, being a bit of a book nerd, I do love all of the new books that come out this time of year.  I also love autumn because I take a break from the bookstore (in all seriousness, the bookstore gets a break from me). Lucky for you (and me), the store will be in the good hands of Jayne, Victoria, Morgan, Matt, Maddie, Andrea and Eliza. Check up on them, will you??

On Wednesday I head to Scotland for two weeks. We'll first drive to Wigtown to visit the Scottish book festival and then we'll take a leisurely drive up the west coast before heading back to Edinburgh. Victoria tells me to remember my waterproof shoes! We'll have a good time no matter the weather.
I just finished the new Ann Cleeves book (she's going to be at the festival). Who doesn't like Jimmy Perez? And I'm looking forward to reading Diary of a Bookseller by Shaun Bythell -- it's a memoir about his time running a second-hand bookstore in Wigtown, Scotland.  I'm not letting myself take an extra suitcase... but I'm thinking they'll sell them there.

I'm excited and a bit crazy trying to get ready to leave town  - which is why you're receiving the October newsletter early. I also gave Doug Moe a break this month but you'll be sure to see him at one of the many events we have scheduled in October.

The newsletter this month will be a bit like those 'autumnal winds' noted above - breezy. If you have questions about anything or would like to pre-order a book, please send an email to info@mysterytomebooks.com

October Events
It's always a special month when we get to host the store's best-selling author, Kathleen Ernst. Kathleen will be at the store on Thursday, October 11 at 6:30 pm. If you're planning to join us, please click here to RSVP.  Kathleen's new book is titled The Lacemaker's Secret. Chloe Ellefson #9 takes Chloe to the Green Bay area where she gets involved in solving the mystery of some very old Belgian lace. Here's what Kathleen notes on her website:

To help readers understand on a personal level some of what the Belgian immigrants experienced, I created the character of Seraphine Moreau.  You’ll first meet her in the Kingdom of Belgium when she and her twin Octavie, newly orphaned, are sent to a convent. There they learn the delicate art of making bobbin lace. Seraphine discovers she has a talent for the work, and dreams of being a piqueuse—one who creates lace patterns.

Kathleen's books are always a treat, and this one doesn't disappoint - in fact, I think it's the best so far!

There is something for everyone this month - it's Wisconsin book festival time and we will be hosting some of the events at the store, at the Library, and at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. Here's a link to our event handout that includes non-Festival events and the festival events at which we're the booksellers.

Here's what Kirkus review has to say:  “In the vein of Shirley Jackson’s bone-chilling The Haunting of Hill House, Fuller’s disturbing novel will entrap readers in its twisty narrative, leaving them to reckon with what is real and what is unreal. An intoxicating, unsettling masterpiece.”
