‘To Mark or NOT to Mark?’

Over the last 12 months I have been interested to read the numerous articles in the educational press on the topic of marking. Having ‘been around’ for quite a long time in the business of education ‘good ideas’ and the ‘best way to educate young people’ come and go.

However, one integral element of the learning process that has changed very little over the years is marking. The ticks, initials, smiley face stamps and possibly some hand written teacher comments explaining if the work was ‘good’ or not have been for years a very familiar sight in student books. More recently, in an attempt to evidence that high quality feedback is being given to students and that they are responding to it, many teachers across the country have been ‘burning the midnight oil’ day after day in an attempt to keep up with what I feel is a misguided attempt to evidence the feedback and marking process for external audiences.

There are numerous stories of teachers in schools ‘triple marking’ every piece of written work – the student does the work, the teacher feeds back in writing, the student responds in writing and then the teacher responds in writing the student response – Madness!

We don’t do this at John Hanson.
If/when you get to see your child’s books, you will not see a lot of written responses from teachers or ticks, initials or smiley face stamps for that matter! We are very much in agreement with the wealth of education research that says this form of marking has minimal impact on student attainment/progress while taking hours for teachers to produce.

‘To Mark or NOT to Mark?’ contd .. .

So what do we do?

We make sure that students receive quality feedback in relation to what they can and cannot do along with specific actions that are aimed at supporting them to be able to attain to the highest possible standard and make excellent progress. We call this FAR – Feedback, Action, Response. The student takes on board the feedback, actions and response. The response shows how well they can now do the ‘things’, they could not do before. This evidence is then used by the teacher to plan future lessons and learning opportunities.

Not every piece of student work will be assessed in this way, but it is critically important that teachers are aware of the quality of work in student books at all times. Therefore, we employ a process of whole class marking. The teacher will have set Intended Learning Outcomes for a lesson and students will, in many cases, have produced written work in response. The teacher will consider the work produced (without writing in student books) to look for misconceptions, errors, incomplete work, spelling and grammar errors and indeed work that is of really high quality. Armed with this knowledge they will then plan lessons and learning episodes to address these issues.

As a consequence, students know what they are good at, what they need to work on and receive lessons that are constructed to address their needs.

I hope you would agree this is FAR better than a tick and a smiley face stamp!

Enjoy the weekend with your children

We celebrated Roald Dahl day on Thursday 13th September with quizzes, story extracts and Revolting Rhymes in tutor time.  The LRC ran a quiz too, and students could read key quotes around the corridors from his most famous stories.

A fun, readingtastic day was had by all!

JUST ARRIVED IN THE LRC

Last summer, the whole school got involved in The Big Write!
