September of Service: Halfway Point!

This has been a great SOS so far! We are only at the halfway point and we have already served over 900 hours! That's AMAZING!! We are trying to beat our record of 1,958 hours set in 2015. It's going to be tough, but if everyone pitches in, WE CAN DO IT! Last week, 101 awesome volunteers weeded and planted and mulched (oh my!) with Memphis Tilth (pictured), cleaned and pruned the Spanish American Memorial Park with Volunteer Memphis, cleaned coolers and folded boxes that MIFA uses to deliver Meals on Wheels, organized with Agape Child and Family Services, played after-school games with the children served by Memphis Athletic Ministries, personed the children's area with Civitan at the Cooper Young Festival, and collected donations and helped guests at the Levitt Shell.

If you want to join in the fun and help your community, go to cbu.edu/sos to sign up for one of our upcoming events. Below are some where we need the most help. We have two brand new projects and will be adding two more, so be sure to check back.

  • NEW TIME! Monday, September 17, 1:45-4:45 p.m. at Meritan, cleaning up the grounds at a senior citizen's home (8 spots left).
  • NEW! Tuesday, September 18, 4:45-8:20 p.m. helping with meals for homeless individuals at Refuge Memphis (16 spots left).
  • Thursday, September 20, 4:15-7:20 p.m. sprucing up a compost facility with Compost Fairy (6 spots left).
  • Sunday, September 23, project TBD — we'll need volunteers! Stay tuned!
  • Monday, September 24, project TBD — we'll need volunteers! Stay tuned!
  • Thursday, September 27, 1:15-5:20 p.m., landscaping, trimming and pruning trees, in our neighboring Beltline Community with Jacob's Ladder (8 spots left).
  • NEW! Sunday, September 30, 8:45am to 1:45 p.m. helping with Memphis Botanic Garden's Japan Fest (9 spots left).
CBU, you are the BEST! Thanks for helping so many deserving individuals in our city. And if you haven't signed up yet, you can do that at cbu.edu/sos and be sure to like our SOS Facebook page where we post your beautiful faces.

Volunteer Opportunities

BE A HOSPITAL VOLUNTEER AT ST. JUDE
Volunteers are the lifeblood of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, providing crucial support services that are vital to the hospital and the well-being of its patients. Every day, willing volunteers donate their time and energy so that St. Jude can fulfill its mission of finding cures and providing care. Filling a wide variety of roles throughout the hospital, the impact of volunteers extends beyond the immediate needs they meet. Whether they are playing games with children, giving parents a much-needed break, or working the Happy Cart like CBU Lasallian Fellow Alison Allensworth ('18), their generosity leaves a lasting impression on all those they serve.

VOTER PROTECTION PROGRAM SEEKING VOLUNTEERS
The Tennessee Democratic Party is actively recruiting students, faculty, and staff with a high interest in voter integrity who also would not mind learning or already have a working knowledge of election laws to serve as poll watchers, on-call attorneys, and hotline workers. The Party is looking to recruit at least two workers for each precinct for Early Voting (for each of the 27 precincts and each of the 14 days) and Election Day Voting (each of the 55 sites). Training (potentially on campus) will be provided. For more information, contact Kendra Lee, Regional Voter Protection Director for West TN at Kendra@VictoryTennessee.org or (901) 830-9348.

The major announcement came in an article in The Commercial Appeal, which was published online on September 10 and then appeared on the front page of the printed edition on September 12 (pictured at left). The news of his retirement was also covered in an article in the Memphis Business Journal on September 11.

The Commercial Appeal also covered the announcement of the 2019 U.S. News college rankings — and CBU's high placement! — in a September 11 article entitled "Four Memphis colleges, universities make 2019 U.S. News & World Report rankings." More info on the various college rankings is also available at cbu.edu/news
