Update as of Friday, September 14 Regarding Hurricane Florence

Mocksville, NC – Davie County Emergency Management continues to keep a close eye on Hurricane Florence.  Based on information received from the National Weather Service earlier today, residents can anticipate the following:

--High wind gusts are expected through Friday.
--Winds are likely to be 20-40 mph.
--Winds could be higher, especially if the storm moves further north of the I-85 corridor.
--Our area will likely experience the most severe weather Saturday-Sunday.
--Anticipated rain totals are projected at 7-10 inches.

In preparation for this weather event, residents are encouraged to take note of the following:

In the event of widespread power outages or severe flooding, emergency shelters will be established in our area.  Once a determination is made, notices to the public will go out.  Should citizens show up expecting to shelter without a shelter formally being opened or manned, they will not be accommodated.  If a determination is made to open a shelter, the first to open would be the Brock Gym in Mocksville.  Other sites that may be available are Smith Grove Ruritan Club, Cooleemee VFW Post, Cornerstone Church and Mocksville Elementary.  PLEASE NOTE that at this time, these additional sites are merely identified in the event they are needed as an alternate or in the case of overflow.  Again, at this time NO SHELTER SITES IN DAVIE COUNTY are open.  In the event a site is opened, the community will be notified.  For a listing of available shelters in NC, click here.

If a shelter is opened, those using shelters are expected to bring with them at least the following items:

·         Bedding (Pillow and blankets)
·         Personal / family prescription medications
·         Extra clothing
·         Personal hygiene products and toiletries
·         Books, games (to entertain children)
·         Special dietary needs (including infant formulas, etc.)
·         Personal identification (driver’s license / ID card)

Weapons, illegal drugs, alcohol, fireworks, etc. are not allowed.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for the Citizen Emergency Notification System.  This is especially helpful to residents who do not have access to email or social media. To sign up, click here.

As long as the Davie YMCA has power, and assuming weather conditions are safe, the facility will be open to any community member for showers and to charge electronic devices at no charge.  A photo ID will be required to enter.
