Welcome the world to Atlanta at the 2018 International WFTDA Playoffs! From September 21-23, roller derby teams from around the globe will settle into the Georgia International Convention Center for a long weekend of jam-packed flat track action. If you’re looking for a hefty dose of derby, this is the event for you. If you’ve got questions about your dosage, this is the newsletter for you.
 

What is the International WFTDA Playoffs?

The very best roller derby teams on the planet are vying to prove that they’re the best of the best of the roller derby teams on the planet. The roller derby you’ve met at Atlanta home games is making strides toward 2018’s big leagues. And she’s got a good shot- Atlanta’s Dirty South Derby Girls are currently ranked as the number 11 roller derby team in the world. Will DSDG get the chance to represent Atlanta in November’s New Orleans Championship games? Come to playoffs and find out!

How can I best prepare to welcome roller derby visitors to Atlanta?

The Atlanta Rollergirls have anticipated your need by preparing an instructional lipsync to the tune of Jermaine Dupri’s “Welcome to Atlanta” featuring Ludacris. You can view the video here.

 

How “international” is this event going to actually be?

Teams are flying in from exotic locales such Ann Arbor, Michigan. And, uh, also Berlin, London, Brisbane, and Montréal. Other US teams are coming from Chicago, the San Francisco Bay Area, Austin, Seattle, and Buffalo.

 

When should I go if I want a maximum dosage of Atlanta players?

Atlanta’s Dirty South Derby Girls definitely play on Friday at 8:20 against either London or Bear City (Berlin). If they win, they’ll go on to play their next game on Saturday at 6 PM, and then either 3 PM or 5:20 PM on Sunday. If they lose on Friday, they’ll play next on Sunday at 1 PM.

 

You can buy tickets for just one evening (the last two games of the day), a full day, or the full 3 days of events. There are discounts for students, seniors, and the military.

 

Is there anything else cool going on?

Vendors with roller derby gear and merchandise! Food! Beer! Roller Derby Celebrities! Dancing from The Prancing Elites! Drumming from the Atlanta Taiko Project! Sick, sliding moves from the Gilmore Skate Crew!
