Unfortunately I got off to a late start this month’s edition: as a result of the new school year our sons needed to be moved into their student housing, and I had to reach out to my students at NYU and Hofstra University in order to work out my teaching schedules…and then there were those two floods in our basement, too…
As a result I’ll be looking back at concerts that have happened already over the first half of September and will “advertise” a few events at the beginning of October. So here it goes:

Recap I: Family Trip to North Carolina
Somehow it seems that more and more folks are moving to North Carolina – so we wanted to find out what the hype is all about. We flew into Charlotte and headed west first, exploring the Lake Lure region and the very hip town of Asheville. We had some incredible food, amazing local micro brewery beverages and went on a beautiful hike…

After a few days in the mountains we headed back east to visit friends in Hillsboro, where I ran into this sign:

Eventually we ended up at our friends’ perfect beach house in Topsail Beach – what a nice way to celebrate the final days of summer!
Unfortunately hurricane Florence is headed directly towards our friends’ beach house just north of Wilmington, NC – we are keeping our fingers crossed for all of the folks in the Carolinas!

Recap II: The Robinson's Cookout
Our town of Teaneck, New Jersey has been the home to many jazz musicians for many decades; legends such as the Adderly Brothers, Milt Jackson, Sam Jones and Bill Evans used to live here, and many noticeable colleagues still do.
It is always wonderful to see some of our jazz musician neighbors at the annual cookout of Scott and Sharon Robinson; the food is always incredible, especially when prepared in Scott’s smoker: fish, mussels, nuts, cheese and bourbon will be presented that way over the course of the evening.
Sooner or later Scott usually opens the doors of his laboratory (former garage) for people to jam. Due to the lack of drummers I found myself playing the ride cymbal with pianist Michael Weiss, bassist Bill Moring, clarinetist Anat Cohen and Scott on tenor sax; later on I ended up providing some piano accompaniment for a bass solo by Maestro Rufus Reid!
Here is a photo of Scott’s newest creation: a hat he made entirely of old tenor reeds – and he swears that he played them all!

Recap III: Mezzrow with Chuck Redd and John DiMartino
What a wonderful addition Spike Wilner’s second club “Mezzrow” has been to the jazz club scene in NYC…especially since Spike’s purchase of a beautiful new Steinway grand it is one of my favorite places to play…on this planet!
On September 7 & 8 I set up on that little club stage next to vibraphonist Chuck Redd and pianist John DiMartino, and it was swingin’!
Chuck got his first break in his early twenties in the band of guitarist Charlie Byrd and is equally accomplished on drums…besides playing standard material we also dug into some compositions by pianist Monty Alexander, who we both have played with and who we all adore!
On Saturday night we went to Brazil for a bit with the help of singer Maucha Adnet and drummer Duduka Da Fonseca, who sat in for a few tunes.

Recap IV: Mays/Wilson/Wind Trio at the COTA Jazz Festival
After not having played with one of my favorite bands that I was ever a part of for several years the performance at the Deerhead Inn as part of the COTA Festival in the Delaware Water Gap, Pa on Sunday, September 9 marked our second reunion of 2018.
As always, this ensemble delivered: without any rehearsal or talk through we took right off, went to Mars and back over the course of two unbelievable sets – what a journey it was! I sure hope that we’ll be recording, soon, and that this group will be a regular appearance in concert venues again, soon!

Ann Hampton Callaway's new show "A Tribute to Linda Ronstadt" at 54 Below/Feinstein's
Ann is amazing: she always cooks up a new show, some of which are dedicated to singers that have influenced her greatly such as Ella, Sarah or Barbara Streisand. At our three-night run at 54 Below/Feinstein’s we will be paying a tribute to the iconic Linda Ronstadt. The band consists of Billy Stritch on piano and vocals, Bob Mann (who is on many of Linda’s original recordings) on guitar and background vocals, and Tim Horner on drums.
For this show I will exclusively be playing the acoustic bass guitar – watch out!

On the day after our Gershwin evening at Dizzy’s I will be heading to Europe for a few duo concerts with the amazing Belgian guitarist and European Jazz legend Philip Catherine.
