The Bulletin - Free Geek Toronto's Quarterly Newsletter
Since 2009, Free Geek Toronto has been promoting social and economic justice, focusing on marginalized populations in the Greater Toronto area.
Our vision is to make our city a place where e-waste is disposed of responsibly, safely and ethically, and where everyone has access to computers and the Internet.
Note from Executive Director
Welcome to our newly re-designed newsletter, The Bulletin! It's been almost eight months since our last newsletter and a lot has happened at Free Geek Toronto! We had lots of new volunteers join, had some interesting items in both our Refurbished Computer Store and Thrift Shop, and been to New York City to meet with other Free Geek organizations.
We're really excited for all the workshops we've been able to run for community organizations across the city, helping people gain the skills and knowledge to effectively use technology to improve their lives and communities.
I hope everyone has a chance to drop by 180 Sudbury to see everything going on!
Ryan Fukunaga,
Executive Director
Here is a look at some of our most prominent events and activities from the last quarter.
Free Geek Toronto is proud to be one of 18 startups in Ontario to be selected by the Centre for Social Innovation for its 2018 accelerator program - Agents of Change: Climate Solutions. As an AoC, we continue to work towards reducing carbon footprint by disposing of electronic waste responsibly, safely and ethically
On May 31st, as part of #digitalliteracyday, our Executive Director, Ryan Fukunaga, went to the @tpl.teens Youth Hub at Centennial Public Library to give an introductory lesson on computer hardware (and how to build a gaming rig for cheap) with #reused & #refurbished#technology.
Our End of School SALE ran from June 12-June 22. We were able to raise over $5000 through sale of furbished computers and other thrift shop items.
The Hope Conference is a biennial hacker event featuring talks, workshops, hackerspaces and more. Free Geek Toronto's Ryan Fukunaga (pictured above with the rest of the panel including members from Free Geek Portland, Free Geek Arkansas & FreeIT Athens) was a part of the panel discussing the ins and outs of running an organization like Free Geek.
Free Geek Toronto has been approved as a qualified social enterprise that meets the City of Toronto's criteria as a diverse supplier.
We look forward to helping advance the social procurement of e-waste in the Greater Toronto-Hamilton area with the Social Purchasing Project.
