Hurricane Hugo Memories From My PTL, Heritage USA Days......

I’m in WV at my daughter’s but my son is still home in Rock Hill, South Carolina, which is about 12 minutes South of Charlotte, North Carolina. My church, MorningStar, is right on the NC/SC border in Fort Mill in the old PTL/Heritage USA Grand Hotel. They are getting slammed there for the next 48 hours. The system then heads for us in WV. The weather folks say 12 to 18 inches of rain is expected in the Charlotte area. It’s crazy to think the whole area will be one huge pool.
I was the Manager on Duty at that hotel during Hurricane Hugo in 1989. I had a great crew who helped evacuate the campgrounds and take care of all the people. Even to rescuing a man on oxygen riding a handicap scooter out of the third floor glass elevator when the power went out, prying the elevator open and carrying him and his equipment down four flights of stairs.
The only safe place without windows was to get chairs and put everyone into the offices behind the front desk. It was hot and muggy, but at least everyone was safe.
People took refuge with us who lived in mobile homes nearby or who drove off the interstate to us, figuring they would be more safe at our Christian retreat.
A family of five small children were trying to come in a side door by the indoor Mainstreet Mall stores, and we got them inside just before a tub flew out of the big tower out back, landing where they had been. Bricks from the building pelted vehicle windows below.
We had revolving doors that no one could stop from blowing round and round, constantly throwing Hurricane debris across the lobby as it did.
During the eye, our security department and maintenance men raided the General Store of perishable food so that we had food and drinks for those we were protecting. (We made sure to properly write it all up.)
It was quite an adventure! I was also a lot younger. LOL.
I’ll be 64 in a few weeks on November 3rd. If I have to confront something, I’ll surely do it. I’m no whimp. But for situations like Hurricane Florence, if I have a choice, I’m not into putting myself in dramatic or traumatic situations or in harm’s way.
I encounter storms and tornadic weather all the time as I travel. All alone with my two little dogs, I drive most everywhere I go. I take shelter till it’s over. But a Hurricane like this one lasts for days. At my age, I just don’t see the point of wasting my time having to endure the extended trauma if I don’t have to. That’s my personal outlook for me. To those who want the “adventure,” I pray you stay safe anyhow.🙏🙏🙏
I’ll still have to go through some of this nasty hurricane’s weather here in WV. Praying for the best outcome for everyone. Then I’m heading to Alabama for some ministry adventures! That’s the kind of adventures I enjoy these days!😊
