Kansas AD Long points to rebuilding the FB program with financial support for key items like recruiting budgets before fully turning his attention to the campaign to overhaul Memorial Stadium. Long: "I am not sure where the campaign is. But we need to raise funds for coaches to go out and recruit the players who would build the team. There are things missing in our program — that is going to take resources." Points to competitive success & budget investments that can turn the corner, "As the football program gets stronger, we will drive people to the (football) community. It’s already happening with basketball." (link)
Just weeks into his new gig, The Citadel AD Capaccio covers some good ground in a Q&A with The Charleston Post & Courier. Capaccio notes he wasn't planning to be in the mix for the permanent position after serving as interim, "I was encouraged to apply by some people in administration, and it was not something I was anticipating. […] It happened very quickly; it was under a three-week deal from when I applied until I was named AD. What I was told is that I was the guy who could come in and get this thing going, because I already knew the inner workings of the organization. The Citadel is a different school, and it takes time to get accustomed to it." Johnson Hagood Stadium will get a new turf field after this FB season (cost: $1M), but a rebuilt east side (cost: $4M) won't happen until 2020. On the FB scheduling front, Capaccio believes the day is coming when 'Power 5' programs will "take their ball and go play at a different level. That will provide a real challenge for schools like us." Wants to get to $50M for the scholarship endowment, currently at $19M. (link)
Hurricane Florence is the latest Fall storm to wreck the college FB schedule, which brought many calls for a 14-week schedule in the future that could include two bye weeks & greater overall flexibility. The Associated Press's Russo pens on a similar review just a few years ago that didn't really go anywhere. Big 12 Commish Bowlsby: "Aspirationally, what we wanted to do was build in some recovery time for the players during the course of the season and try and do it in a way that was equitable. In the end, the 14-week season with the two byes just wasn’t going to work from a practical standpoint so we moved away from it." AFCA boss Berry says his constituency was worried about pre-season practice running up against other obligations in July or not having enough time to get student-athletes ready for contact if the number of pre-season practices was reduced. (link)
North Texas scores its largest gift ever in a $2.5M commitment for the new indoor FB practice facility. Longtime donor Lovelace: "The UNT football program, under the leadership of President Neal Smatresk, Athletics Director Wren Baker, and head football coach Seth Littrell, is bringing championship football to our university, and doing it the right way, by building champions and preparing leaders. We are optimistic that the addition of this indoor practice facility will further enhance this cause." (link)
Details on the investigation into alleged sexual misconduct brought against Washington State Asst. AD for the Cougar Athletic Fund Gesser include former WSU stand-out & member of the AD search committee Thompson telling others in the athletic department to "fall in line" when they reported the situation. According to reports, "fall in line" was also associated with keeping the allegations from reaching the President's office. More. (link); Gesser: "The only thing I care about more deeply than WSU is my family and integrity. I want to clearly state that the allegations are not true. I am categorically opposed to harassment or sexism in the workplace or society, and I am deeply committed to my wife and children. […] I will not allow my name to be unfairly smeared, and I will continue to passionately serve our University as a proud member of Cougar Nation." (link)
Former Michigan State AD & FB HC & current university Trustee Perles is now being represented by Hickey Hauck Bishoff & Jeffers partner Hickey in connection to the latest Nassar allegations. Yesterday, Hickey said he's not ready to make a statement on Perles' behalf. (link)

Virginia AD Williams says Vanderbilt AD Williams was "eager to help" when she called about potentially relocating the Cavs' FB matchup with Ohio to Nashville. More Williams: "When we first started talking about it, we started to think about what are the parameters, what are we looking for. We’re looking for a site that’s far enough inland that we don’t disrupt any of the first responders or law enforcement that would be needed for the storm. An artificial surface, because quite frankly, when other teams are on the road, it gives their surface, if it’s natural grass, a time to recover." UVA HC Mendenhall: "It’s kind of a combination of a road game, and a bowl game and a hurricane all at the same time." (link)

ESPN SportsCenter headliner & Maryland alum Van Pelt on the culture review going on inside the FB program in College Park, "My understanding is that the 'toxic' culture label, it was said and then it was just repeated so often that it was just accepted as fact, and I don’t believe that [the investigators are] going to find that that’s the case at all. In fact, I think they’ll find quite the opposite among the rank and file players that are there, that, I believe, are supportive of Durkin." Further: "Even if they do this internal review and people find out that this was a tragic accident, but actually within the program [Durkin’s] got a lot of support and the culture wasn’t as described, can he be brought back given the public relations perception that already exists? I don’t know. I don’t know what will happen moving forward." (link)
Murray State Interim AD Velvet Milkman offers her take on the national media acclaim when her appointment went viral, "Anytime we can get Murray State’s name and athletic department out on a national level, I think that’s important. So you really can’t put a dollar figure on that. I didn’t think it was a negative in any way. I was hoping it wasn’t; that was my first thought. My peers, my coaches that I coach with that are my friends, I thought, 'Here we go; we’re going to be a laughingstock', but they weren’t. It was fun; it was a cool name. But that was my thought when it first came out, but it was all in good fun and it wasn’t anything negative in my mind and I thought it was funny." Milkman says she took a week to think about the opportunity before agreeing to lead the Racers with the departure of former AD Ward to Abilene Christian. Ward thinks Milkman would make an excellent permanent replacement if she's interested, "No one is more respected than Velvet, both on campus and in the community. She’s got what it takes to do the job." (link)
Ohio State FB HC Meyer's suspension officially ends at tonight, but he did not make the trip to Arlington for the Buckeyes' matchup with TCU today. (link); Remember the digital billboards that popped up in Columbus back in 2011, "CONGRATULATIONS TO TCU for their BCS Rose Bowl victory - Little Sisters of the Poor." Turns out, the prank was pulled off by a group of eight TCU alums & fraternity brothers. Former OSU Prez & current West Virginia leader Gee says he thought it was funny, especially since he's the one who branded the Horned Frogs with the non-profit nickname. (link)
Aspiring DI brand North Alabama visits North Dakota State today & the blue print of how the Bison grew into a FCS powerhouse is not lost on the Lions. Former NDSU AD & current Kansas State boss Taylor, "The president has to stand tall. If the president is not on board, it gets rather queasy and will not bode well." UNA Prez Kitts made the trip to Fargo, as did a number of key boosters. Lions AD Linder says the university is ahead of schedule for its transition to full DI membership. (link)
The BBC says it's figured out a way to eliminate the streaming lag common when watching sports on an OTT platform. Major catch: "However, the BBC said it would need the co-operation of the whole broadcasting industry to get the system up and running. It suggested the technology may be available by the time of the next World Cup in 2022, and could be delivered to existing equipment with a software update." (link); TV ratings perspective from @SportsTVRatings, "A little late night-Nielsen that'll hopefully be useful for thinking about studio show numbers. Their are around 40,0000 households and 100,000 people in Nielsen's national panel. So to project out to the whole country, each person represents about 3,000 people. A show that averages a million viewers? That means around 333 Nielsen panelists watched on average. A show with 100,000: 33!  A show with 50, 17! The jump from 50,000 to 100,000 is only around 17 actual Nielsen panelists." (link, link)
The Athletic's Jennings reviews the physical gains by Utah FB student-athletes. Former Ute & current Atlanta Falcons defensive lineman Shelby went from a 200-pound signee to a 271-pound Pac-12 first teamer on a regiment of eggs, peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, plus protein shakes. Utah currently has four student-athletes who have gained 60 pounds or more since their arrival in Salt Lake. HC Whittingham: "It’s physiologically, the size of his frame, if he has a big skeleton and broad shoulders — then you can more or less see the potential for growth. You look at his parents. What kind of size do his parents have? What are the size of his feet? How big are his hands? There are telltale signs." Director of Sports Science Rimer leads the healthy gains, assisted by Strength & Conditioning boss Elisaia & Nutritionist Moore. Lots more. (link); Speaking of Strength & Conditioning HCs, Ohio State's Marotti is up to $613K this year, still lags Iowa's Doyle ($725K) & Tennessee's Fitzgerald ($625K). (link)

UConn AD Benedict on the state of football in Storrs: "We're in that difficult part of rebuilding a program. The outcomes of games are not necessarily always reflective of where your program is at. I don't think anybody involved with UConn — a student-athlete, a coach, an administrator, a fan — felt good about the outcome of the [Boise State] game. Those are hard things to go through, but they're a part of rebuilding a program. We all know what our program can be because we've been there before. I'm focused on what it [takes] every day and over the next couple years to get us back to that place. I'm not focused on what got us here because that, at this point in time, doesn't change anything. This is where we find ourselves today. ... I have every reason to believe that Randy is the right person for us, to be leading us through this time. I talk to a lot of people who have a lot of history with our program and most of those people say that this feels very reminiscent of last time Randy was here and we went through a similar rebuilding process. It might have been different because we were transitioning from FCS to FBS, but it's a similar process of becoming competitive at this level. It's like a battleship. It takes a while to turn it." (link)
Arizona State AD Anderson points to FB HC Edwards proving his game management chops by leveraging ball control & the clock to make Michigan State use timeouts late in last weekend's game before kicking a field goal for the win. Anderson: "That was it. I'm not sure folks anticipated he would do that. That was really gratifying to see because some of the folks wanted to doubt the intellectual capacity [of Edwards]. I think he has quieted that noise quite well." Edwards says he's been preaching "humble & hungry" to his Sun Devils as they head to San Diego State tonight. (link)
Memphis boss Bowen is excited to roll out the basketball for his 'Memphis Madness' event on October 4th that's already sold 11K tickets. Bowen coy on what big names may also make an appearance, "I can neither confirm nor deny who’s coming in — I had to sign a confidentially agreement." Plus: "It's in about three weeks. Next week, we'll start hyping [it] up a little bit. I think it’ll be fun." (link)
Drexel will add a "seasonal, domed athletic facility" to its portfolio, as well as renovations to a number of existing areas. Inflation of the new dome will happen by next Fall. US Squash is also set to join the Dragons in its revamped space. Overall, Drexel will have more than 44K square feet of programming space for athletics & the student body. AD Zillmer: "This project, including the construction of two state-of-the-art seasonal domes, will allow us to expand our recreational athletics offerings by 30 percent over the next two years and keep pace to accommodate our students’ growing demand for activity space." More, including renderings. (link)
Golfworld's Herrington with a piece on new Texas A&M Women's Golf HC Gaston, who after 20+ years left behind a super successful program at USC to move to College Station. Among the many differences is a new two-minute commute to work, compared to her previous drive of an hour or more with L.A. traffic. She also appreciates a slower pace of life, which was "one of the things that made this move appealing." Gaston: "I think everybody probably thought I’d finish my career at USC. And quite honestly, that’s really what I thought I’d be doing as well. ... I’m reinvigorated about coaching and really helping players. Instead of thinking I’m almost done, it’s like, 'Hey, I’m just getting started.' I hope this is an encouragement for more women to know this can happen to you, too. You work hard at what you do, you too can deserve great opportunities that may take you places you never thought you might go. And why not? Why not take that on and take that chance." (link)
