Mavericks
The Mavericks have made it through the minor semi-final!! The cheer from the crowd on the sideline when we realised the team had defeated the third placed team to take a seat at the preliminary final was elating and the exhausted Mavericks walked to the sidelines to hugs and applause. It was a hard fought game with lots of swings in momentum. The Mavericks and the North Gungahlin Diamond Backs met twice during the regular season and we lost on both occasions, so there were a lot of nerves heading into the first game of the finals campaign. But, the Mavericks learnt from previous games and hit out hard from the first 15 minutes to take the lead into the first quarter. The Mavericks maintained possession well in the first half and the defensive unit in Shannon, Emily and Lauren created immense pressure to secure innumerable intercepts and turnovers. At half-time the Mavericks had a bit of a scare when Imelda came down on her ankle a little hard and had to come off the court. The team had taken a 29-20 lead into the half-time break and kept their cool despite losing part of a killer shooting combination. Hayley and Meg T went back out onto the court as the new shooting combination to finish the job in the second half. The team battled exhaustion in the third quarter and the diamond backs were not willing to give up the fight to a place in the next round. The continued full court pressure by the Mavericks made all the difference and kept the opposition to only a few goals in the last half. The mid-court in Molly, Laura and Lauren continued to work the ball through and past hard opposition defence. The last quarter was a psychological battle to get over the line and the Mavericks kept their heads to work the ball around the court and slow down play. The final score was 44-28 and you could not wipe the smiles off the Mavericks faces!
