Who's the Integrator Now?
Making sure everyone understands.
Recently we have noticed, in media and elsewhere, references to Minnesota based Cargill as the integrator1 for C&H.  While it is true that Cargill was the initial integrator and therefore responsible for the siting of C&H hog factory within the Buffalo River Watershed, Cargill sold its entire pork division to JBS in 2015. JBS is headquartered in Brazil.

JBS paid $1.45 billion for all of Cargill’s pork business including packing plants, feed mills and hog production facilities. The sale included the contract with the infamous Buffalo River facility.

As we've noted before, the profits go to Brazil, the pig poop stays here.

Integrator- In the case of pork production, the company/integrator provides pigs, feed, and other services to a producer who manages the hogs at his or her farm until the animals are ready for market or transfer to other farms. The "farmer" does not own the pigs and is required to use only the feed provided by the integrator.  The "farmer" is responsible for managing the pig waste and any pigs that die while under his care.

Protecting the water, air and wild places that we all need, is going to require well informed, scientifically sound discussion.

Comparing two million gallons of factory produced hog manure to wild deer poop is not well informed or scientifically sound.

The hog manure is the residue left over from feeding thousands of tons of imported, nutrients.  Nutrients trucked into the Ozarks as concentrated swine feed, eaten by the hogs and then spread onto fields as manure.  All the polluting nutrients in the hog manure are new to the ecosystem, brought in from somewhere else.

All the deer poop, squirrel poop, etc., is just the result of wildlife eating the acorns, roots and grass that are already present in the Ozark ecosystem.

The pollution of the Buffalo River is the result of nutrients imported from outside the Ozarks.  Wild animals are not importing anything.  Wildlife is not part of the pollution problem.

Arkansans should take action for the Buffalo

Bill Underwood’s Sept. 5 letter to the editor focused meaningfully on the disastrous polluting hog farming near our national treasure, the Buffalo River. How can we, the concerned, attempt to make a difference?....

I, a senior senior, do not have a computer so I cannot generate specific addresses. But hopefully the readers get the idea — do something. ....

MONA W. BROWN

Mona, Thanks for your letter.   We suggest calling the Governor to remind him that Arkansans expect the complete shutdown of the C&H facility, fair compensation to the farmers, and the establishment of a permanent moratorium on future hog CAFOs in the Buffalo River Watershed.   Call (501) 682-2345.
Poll Results

In the July newsletter we asked "What do you think is the current status of C&H?"
Percentage of responses for each were:
a) Their permit was denied and they are shutting down. 1.5%
b) Their permit was approved and they continue to operate. 0.7%
c) Their permit was denied but they continue to operate. 40.9%
d) Their permit is in legal limbo and they continue to operate. 56.9%

The answer is both c and d. BRWA is actively engaged in legal challenges before the APC&E Commission and, in spite of delaying tactics and efforts to exhaust our funds, we remain committed to closure of C&H.

Thanks Steve!
