Alice Blanch
Opening: 1.30pm Sat 22 Sept. Until Sat 27 Oct 2018.
Artist Talk: 2pm Sat 13 Oct 2018.
Photographs, both analogue and digital.
Explored both physically and conceptually, as both a photographic subject and as a basis for research and contemplation, the land’s edge is where earth meets the ocean and the river. Art of Medicine

Various South Australian artists/doctors
Opening: 1pm Sun 23 Sept. Until Fri 5 Oct 2018.
Prints, photographs, painting, sculpture and installation.
“Art makes you stop, think and step out of your life into another world for a while.” Dr Roger Sexton on 'Art of Medicine'.
An initiative of Doctor’s Health SA, this exhibition features artworks by a variety of doctors, who each maintain an artistic practice to complement, enhance, or sometimes eclipse their medical career. Art can be all-consuming and demanding, not dissimilar to the rigours of the medical profession. The artists in Art of Medicine have all come to art through different avenues, some creating work as a hobby while others have plunged head-first into life as a practicing artist. Art of Medicine shows us the ingenuity of the doctor/artist through a range of contemporary and mixed-media artworks.

Tarnanthi Festival

Tarnanthi Art Fair: Fri 26 - Sun 28 Oct 2018
John Mawurndjul exhibition: Fri 26 Oct 2019 - Mon 28 Jan 2019

Tarnanthi (pronounced tar-nan-dee) presents contemporary art of the world’s oldest living culture on an unprecedented scale, in a national event held annually by the Art Gallery of South Australia. The name Tarnanthi comes from the language of the Kaurna (pronounced gar-na) people who are the traditional owners of the Adelaide Plains. Tarnanthi means to come forth or appear – like the sun and the first emergence of light. For many cultures, first light signifies new beginnings. The festival is a platform for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from across the country to share important stories. Its artistic vision encourages new beginnings by providing artists with opportunities to create significant new work and to extend their practice. The festival illuminates the diversity and depth of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art by alternately staging an expansive city-wide festival one year and a focus exhibition the following year. This year’s feature artist is master bark painter John Mawurndjul. Tarnanthi includes an annual Art Fair, artist talks, performances and events.

Tarnanthi website for information about festival events & the weekend Art Fair.

Picasso: The Vollard Suite

Opens: Sat 10 Nov 2018. Until Mon 28 Jan 2019.
The Vollard Suite is Pablo Picasso's most celebrated series of etchings. Comprised of 100 works produced between 1930 and 1937, the suite represents a critical point in Picasso's career and contains many of the abiding themes in his work, including his self-representation as the minotaur. The works take their name from Ambroise Vollard, the French art dealer and publisher, who gave Picasso his first Paris exhibition in 1901. The film Blood of a Poet (1930) by Picasso's friend and collaborator, Jean Cocteau, will be screened alongside the exhibition.

Callaborative Variations

Various South Australian & interstate printmakers, artists & writers
Opening: 2pm Sat 11 Nov. Until Sat 15 Dec 2018.
An exhibition about the possibilities of collaborating. Adelaide artists have paired with regional South Australian and interstate artists to make collaborative works, against the odds of distance, time constraints, travel and very busy lives. Collaborative Variations is about the nature and form of the relationships that grow from making work together (often despite great distances), with the results evidencing the integrity, intimacy and friendship of each unique collaboration, and each pair of artists finding new ways to make work, despite all odds. This lovely exhibition shows that collaborations can be many and varied... an inspiration. Curated by Simone Tippett of Union St Printmakers.
Gallery 1855: 2 Haines Rd, Tea Tree Gully SA
For more information email Simone or go to the gallery website.

Two Solo Exhibitions:
Allsorts for Sweet Travels by Dianne Longley
    Tapestries by Rimona Kedem

Opening: 6pm Thurs 22 Nov. Until Fri 13 Dec 2018.
Dianne Longley’s exhibition is an assorted and eclectic mix of media, emblematic of her fascination with the possibilities inherent in a range of printing techniques and processes. Themes of the curious and the grotesque are central to many of Dianne's works and are explored through various types of print on metal, encaustic collages on wood panels, on-glaze porcelains and prints. Baroque borders of foil and decorative papers from India and Kathmandu add a reflective quality to the presentation of the work.
Rimona Kedem’s paintings are a tapestry of emotion which weave together a collection of human interrelationships. Small events, great involvements, rifts between people, love, coffee houses, theatre performances, loneliness, happiness, and tango clubs. These are recordings of the life that goes on while planet Earth is on the way to destruction. We all, the little ants, try to imprint meaning to the short time we survive on its surface, while we have no control over the end result. With these works, Rimona injects energy into every facet of life.

Print Commission 2018

Now in its 52nd year, the Print Commission is an extraordinary record of Australian printmaking. You can view this year's Print Commission at these galleries:
  • Fri 7 Sept - Tues 9 Oct 2018 - The Strand Gallery41 The Strand, Pt Elliot SA - www.strandgallery.com.au

Printmaking and artist books.
Christobel Kelly's exhibition Aldinga examines the strange wonderment of this sometimes gothic, southern landscape. Through letterpress, Kelly's artists’ book uses a process of ‘slow thinking’ in the formulation of each printed word. Even slower than handwriting, the act of printing becomes a way of scraping away until the substrata of time and place are revealed.

Diane Arbus: American Portraits

Until: Mon 1 Oct 2018.
Black and white photographs.
The photographs of Diane Arbus (1923-71) are powerful symbols of post-war America. Her subjects, often those living on the fringes of society, were always photographed in a candid, matter-of-fact way that is empowering and affirming for many viewers, and for others exploitative and voyeuristic. Whatever the case, Arbus’ photographs make us see the world differently. This exhibition shows Arbus’ work alongside the photographs of her artistic predecessors, contemporaries and heirs to her world view – including Walker Evans, Lisette Model, Weegee, Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander, Mary Ellen Mark and Katy Grannan. These photographers all sought to redefine the tradition of portraiture within their times, creating memorable images that are both challenging and moving.

Queen Adelaide and William IV:
     Portraits and Satires

Until Sun 25 Nov 2018.
Historical prints. This exhibition explores the representation of King William IV and Queen Adelaide in portrait prints as well as by the popular press of the day. The nineteenth-century royal prints, which were commissioned for events such as the king’s coronation and the couple’s wedding, offer a fascinating insight into monarchical self-representation. They provide a contrast to the acerbic wit and unflattering treatment of the royal couple at the hands of contemporary satirists such as Robert Seymour and William Heath.

Baldessin/Whitely: Parallel Visions at the NGV

Until: Mon 28 Jan 2019
Prints, drawings, paintings and sculpture.
George Baldessin and Brett Whiteley were both born in 1939. In the 1960s and 1970s both experienced meteoric success in their respective cities of Melbourne and Sydney. Baldessin's prints and Whiteley's drawings and paintings share many startling and unusual synergies. Both were figurative expressionists, attracted to popular culture, to the avant-garde and existentialist ideas. Both were innovative in their use of mediums, were brilliantly provocative in their artistic language and ultimately created art that epitomised their epoch. Tragically, both men also died unexpectedly young. Baldessin/Whiteley: Parallel Visions is a visually exciting and innovative blockbuster exhibition that brings together for the first time the work of these two giants of Australian art.
