LMC Parent and Community Newsletter
September 17th - September 21st, 2018
  • Throughout the year, look here for shout outs and appreciations for our community members!  Or even better, send a shout out of your own to be published in the weekly newsletter.  Submit your shout out by emailing it to Kelly McGuire - kmcguire@lmc896.org
  • A shout out to Maggie C. for your wonderful contributions during our PTA Executive Board meeting last week.  We are so happy you have joined the team!
  • A shout out to Hope, Nicki, Stephanie, and Samantha for taking on some special projects for the PTA.  You are working to create a wonderful environment for LMC kids!
This Week at LMC
  • We are getting ready for Thursday's Meet the Teacher Night to be held Thursday, September 20th from 6pm - 8:00pm.  This event is for adult parents and family members and the evening is broken up into three parts:
    • Each of your child's teachers will provide a short presentation regarding the course they teach.
    • Parents of each homeroom will be divided by their child's advisory.  In this smaller advisory group parents will have the opportunity to ask further questions and get to know the parents of other students in your child's advisory.
    • We wrap up the evening with a few snacks and light fare on the 7th floor - PLEASE NOTE - We are not asking families to contribute to a potluck meal this year.  While delicious, serving 400+ people on the 7th floor is tough to facilitate.
    • See below for information regarding the room you should report to when arriving to LMC.  Doors open at 5:45pm.

Dear LMC Families,

At Lower Manhattan Community student course grades are posted, stored, and shared with families using an online grading system called Jumprope.  Jumprope is different from a traditional grading system.  Instead of organizing student grades by assignment, test, or project, grades are organized by course Standard - also called a "goal"or "outcome".  The vision behind LMC's use of this type of grading system is that students should be graded based on their ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills.  Too often grades have been historically based on whether or not students complete tasks.  While completion is good, we want to ensure your children are learning and growing.  Jumprope is system that helps us track progress, while at the same time offering students and parents up to date information regarding performance, accolades, missing assignments, etc.

Returning families may be very familiar with Jumprope, but please note that this year Jumprope has a new, web-based platform that is accessible via mobile device.  While we will work with parents to get their own email addresses loaded into Jumprope, you can get onto the platform now by accessing an email we have sent to your child's LMC email address.  See below:

New login info for JR
  • Visit Parent/Student login site on LMC homepage HERE
  • Enter Jumprope login info:
    • Username:  Your child's LMC email address (this is the first letter of their first name, then last name, then last 3 digits of their student ID number -for example, bwilliams363@lmc896.org)
    • Password:  Your child's student ID number
  • Highlights based on Upgrade:
    • Works across web, tablet, and mobile phones without the need for Adobe Flash or an app from the app store.
    • Simplified and improved overview of current grades, including a summary of missing work and the date that scores were last updated.
    • Detailed view of mastery per standard including a chart showing any changes in scores over time.
    • Loads faster and takes up less bandwidth
Please note that a detailed Jumprope workshop for parents will take place during our PTA General Meeting on September 26th at 8:30am.

Finally, in continuing with a share of portinos from the LMC 2018-2019 Student Handbook we'd like to highlight one of our school procedures - CVS!

CVS In the Hallways Always!

It is very hard to learn in an environment that is disruptive. That is why we want to work together to create a courteous hallway environment in which everyone can learn their best.  At LMC our courteous hallways are defined by CVS!

  • C = Calm – stay in control, keep your hands to yourself, never run
  • V = Voices are kept low
  • S = Smile and go straight to your destination
Teachers and staff are on hand to remind students of these expectations.  Not following them may result in a recorded, LMC Warning.  3 warnings = a lunch time detention and a phone call home, so be safe and calm in the hallway and get to class on time!

Best,
Kelly McGuire

Can you help?
Here are some things we could use this week:
  • Our teachers meet after school on Mondays and Wednesdays for adult learning and collaboration.  We meet until just about 4pm and in those hours following dismissal teachers get hungry!  If you'd like to help, sending in a little snack for our teachers on those days is always appreciated!
