Annual Retreat Offers New Experiences for 2019

The 2019 LR Class kicked off their opening retreat with a slightly different format this year.  Opening day was held at Staybridge on the Genesee River in the 19th ward.  In addition to opening the class with some classic LR ice breakers and leadership development,  LR2019 took part in a historic walking tour of Rochester’s downtown.

Landmark Society Historic Opening Tour

The previous timeline activity was revised for 2019. A landmark society tour experience was organized by 2019 class member Caitlin Meives, preservationist at the Landmark Society of Western NY.  The tour was led by Cynthia Howk, Greater Rochester’s history and preservation expert. The class began their tour at the Landmark Society and Corn Hill. They continued to St Luke and St Simon Cyrene Church, Rochester’s oldest public building and founded by Nathaniel Rochester located at Fitzhugh and Broad St.  The tour proceeded through the historic county and city buildings, over the river, and ended at The Metropolitan where Lauren Gallina welcomed them to the top floor for a birds-eye view of the city.  Gallina is an LR ’15 alumna and serves on the boards of Leadership Rochester and the Landmark Society among others.  From their high perch Howk discussed the immigrant populations and neighborhoods of Rochester over time.  Alumni who are interested can check out many of the cool upcoming tours from the Landmark Society.

Welcome Dinner for LR 2019

The Leadership Rochester Board of Directors and key LR Alumni Volunteers welcomed the LR class of 2019.  Dinner was held at the close of their opening retreat day.  LR Board Chair, Cindee Gray welcomed the class.  Jeff Davis, Associate Director of RIT Executive Education programs highlighted the notable impact of Leadership Rochester’s participants and alumni.  The evening’s keynote, Deputy Police Chief LaRon Singletary then offered his words of wisdom on how to make the most of their LR experience. The evening offered a warm welcome to the Leadership Rochester experience.

CCSI hosts LR Simulated Society Retreat Activity Day

Coordinated Care Services Inc (CCSI) graciously acted as the host venue for Leadership Rochester’s Simulated Society retreat day two.  The annual LR experience was facilitated by Skip Helfrich, Human Energies Inc. New for 2019, the venue for the experience was moved to CCSI, a major local service agency serving our region. President and CEO, Anne Wilder, greeted the LR class. Wilder is an alumna of the LR program and has supported several CCSI leaders who’ve participated in the program.

When LR put out a call for new venues earlier this year, we were thrilled to receive support and feedback from many including LR Alumna Nancy Sung Shelton, Senior Consultant and Cultural Intelligence Strategist at CCSI.   Shelton offered CCSI as a host venue for the 2019 LR event saying she understands the power that a simulation exercises have.  Working for CCSI, Nancy facilitates a powerful short format poverty simulation experience for groups and individuals across the Greater Rochester region.  Though different than the SimSoc experience by Leadership Rochester, both simulations are powerful and transformative for participants.

Martin Luther King   "The Drum Major Instinct" `1968
On true leadership..

"You must earn it. True greatness comes not by favoritism but by fitness…If you want to be important—wonderful. If you want to be recognized—wonderful. If you want to be great—wonderful. But recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. That’s your new definition of greatness. And this morning, the thing that I like about it…by giving that definition of greatness, it means that everybody can be great. Because everybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don’t have to know Einstein’s theory of relativity to serve. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. And you can be that servant.”
