From the President
Lisa Bradley: president@a2jaycees.org
Fall has officially started and while everyone is thinking about apple orchards, pumpkin flavored everything, and sweaters, I think about the evolution of the Jaycee calendar.  The last 3 months of the year not only mean amazing holiday-themed events (Zombie Zap and Friendsgiving - yes!) but also are a time for transition as the 2019 Board of Directors is elected.  As my monumental two-term Presidency is getting wrapped up, I can say without a doubt, that it has been a surreal experience, one I will remember my entire life.  The best part is that my career with the Jaycees is not over and I look forward to contributing to the organization in different ways in years to come.  I encourage all of you to take a step outside your comfort zone and go for a leadership position!  The future of the chapter is in your hands.
August Monthly Meeting Recap
What’s better than a guest speaker? A guest speaker who is also a member of our chapter!  We were excited to have A2JC Kristin Burt as our guest speaker in September to talk to us about JDRF and the JDRF One Walk in Ann Arbor.  We also heard all about our upcoming events for September and October!  Our next meeting will be October 4th at 7 p.m. with Big Brothers Big Sisters as the guest speaker.  See you there!
Upcoming Event: A2JC Happy Hour
October 15: A2JC Happy Hour!  Mark your calendar to grab drinks with the whole chapter. 5-7pm. Location TBD
A2JC 301
This past Thursday [August 23], I had the pleasure of being invited to Ann Arbors A2JC 301 training.  I was happy to be able to lead a unique icebreaker to loosen everyone up. This training is meant to help newer members learn to think through the "Why" of a project, the PMG process and how a project is run. Past President Michael Lee gave an exceptional description of the "pyramid" of the organization, and the food was delicious. We even closed the meeting out with For the Good of the Chapter! I had a great time.  President Lisa also gave me swag!!!   - Kymi Toliver, JCI Michigan District 3 Director

In 2000, I held my first role on the Ann Arbor Jaycees’ Board of Directors. I was appointed by the Chapter President to be the Newsletter Editor. It may not sound like a big job, but things were a little different back then. Each month, I would collect articles from the Board and our project chairs, putting together an 18-page paper newsletter that was mailed out to our 200+ members, after being hand-folded and sorted at the ever-popular Crier Folding Party. That role was my introduction to leadership in the Jaycees organization. For the next 15 years, I served at the local, state and national levels of the organization, including Chapter President in 2003, State President in 2009 and National President in 2014.

I learned so much during my time as a Board Member at all levels that it would be difficult to capture it all in one article. So, here are the Top 5 reasons to take the next step in your Jaycee career:

  1. Challenge yourself. Try something new or different. Push yourself outside your comfort zone. You will be amazed at what you’re capable of. The sky’s the limit on what you can do!
  1. Learn something new. Work in an area that you haven’t had exposure to yet. Do something that you wouldn’t have the opportunity to do in your everyday life.
  1. Becoming part of a team. There’s something to be said about being a member of a team, any team. Your fellow Board members will be there to share the highs and the lows, to celebrate the victories and help you move past the defeats. Your bond will last well beyond the year you serve together and will lead to lifelong friendships. Plus, there’s all the inside jokes! (Ask me about the weathervane sometime…)
  1. Leadership development. Most members don’t join the Jaycees to become a leader, but by serving on the Board, you will slowly gain leadership skills that you never knew you had. And, you will be able to apply them to future Board roles, your career, your work with other community organizations and more. Dream big! You may be the next JCI World President, and you don’t even know it!

And the #1 reason to consider joining the Board:
  1. FUN! I wouldn’t have served on 16 Boards of Directors if I wasn’t having fun. Fun comes in many different shapes and sizes, and it definitely ebbs and flows throughout the year. If you’re passionate about what you’re doing, feel like you’re making a difference, whether it’s for our members, the community or yourself, then serving on the Board will be a rewarding and fun experience.

Hopefully, this little bit of history and insight has ignited the spark in each of you to consider serving on the Board in 2019 or beyond. I am proud to be part of the Ann Arbor Jaycees’ legacy of leadership, and I am truly excited to see where YOU will take our organization in the future.

Fall Leadership Conference
Ann Arbor was in the top 5 chapters of the trimester - placing 5th
Speed Friending received two awards:First ever Membership Event of the Trimester and Award of Excellence
Although I've been to conference before, it was my first time presenting a SPE (Single Project Entry) for Speed Friending. I'm glad I got the experience to present and even more exciting that the project won! Conference is a great time to meet people from other chapters and learn new things. I hope you all consider join us for the February 2019 Conference in Grand Rapids.  -Carena Townsend
State conferences are a great way to meet other Jaycees, learn about other chapters, and collect ideas for community and social activities back home. For the recent Fall conference, I am happy to say the leadership skills session by Anna Versalle [Chief Operations Officer at JCI Michigan] and the membership session by Neil Fitzgerald [Director of Chapter Development at JCI USA] were both interesting and useful. -Michael Schultz
Congratulations to our own Carolyn on her Conference First Timer award!

December Project: Kindlefest
It's never too early to start thinking about the holiday season! For our older members, we have a new contact for Kindlefest (which our voice to text voicemail system lovingly referred to has Kimball Fest) and I am hoping that means we have some exciting new aspects in store for our volunteers this year. For our new members, Kindlefest is basically a Midnight Madness-style event at Kerrytown at the beginning of December. We get the best gig available: selling, serving (and sampling) the Glühwein and beer for the festival as another fundraising opportunity for our chapter. If you have any interest in making this event better than ever, come chat with me! (Emily B!)
