Dear Friend of KAA,

September 2018
Welcome!

It has been a wild, rollercoaster summer! Storms have been frequent, with violent winds wreaking havoc on our trees. We’ve seen quite a bit of damage to structure from falling limbs and/or uprooted trees. But that is normal for us in Kentucky, isn’t it?

The Kentucky Arborists Association has been busy this summer, too. We have a set date for the upcoming Conference: February 21-22, 2019, in northern Kentucky, and our Tree Climbing Committee has been working on the upcoming Kentucky Championship competition. This event is being held at the Henry Clay Estate in Lexington on Saturday, October 13, with set up being on Friday, October 12. There will be quite a slew of activities for the entire family. Along with the climbing for competitors, there will be a Kids’ Climb, educational booths, various vendors, and food! And, if you have time, the Estate is open for you to check out the grounds. Hope to see you there!

On current business in the KAA, we have included an updated version of our bylaws, which I would like for you to take a minute to read over. If you have any questions, please send us an email. We have added into our bylaws a new liaison--the Kentucky Horticulture Council, with Cindy Finneseth as acting representative. Teaming up with the KHC will open the door to many opportunities for KAA, including an opportunity to showcase Certified Arborists throughout the state.

Cindy has written a small intro and instructions on how to get your name and company out there. This will open the door to the public and to local county extension agents in our areas to make use of a Certified Arborist for tree issues. We are very excited about this! It’s the first step in educating the public on the advantages of using Certified Arborists for tree care!

We have quite an agenda of events coming up this year and into the next. And we always welcome anyone who wishes to help. If you have a desire to become involved, please let me know!

Be safe,

Laura Lyon

CASE OF THE DAY

YOU PAYS YOUR MONEY AND
YOU TAKES YOUR CHANCE

We have seen two divergent views on boundary tree ownership, the Colorado view that it depends on the intent of the property owner, the Illinois view that it is a simple matter of where the tree is growing, and the Connecticut view that both owners can hack at the branches and roots of a boundary tree with abandon.

big win for urban forests

Climber’s Collective

Imagine if all of Kentucky’s arborists were placed
in a room. This group’s knowledge would be
astounding. The reality of our daily jobs is that
we do not always have this large team to solve
our rigging and climbing questions, but from
conversations with other arborists, it is apparent
that the desire to learn from and contribute to
this large group is present in our community.

Currently the concept of a monthly gathering of
interested climbers meeting to learn, practice and
teach skills to other climbers is just a working idea.
The goal would be to increase our knowledge and
become safer, more efficient arborists and to socialize
with others in the community. Please stay tuned and
feel free to contact me with any thoughts or ideas.

Special Thanks

Dave Leonard & John Saylor for riding in this year’s Tour Des Trees to raise money for
TREE Fund!

Save the dates! The 2019 Tour des Trees will be
Sept 15-21, 2019 in KY and TN. Read more at https://www.treefund.org/archives/15970 and
share the news! #tourdestrees

Dave biked the Buckeye State from Columbus to the Cleveland loop raising an outstanding amount of
$3955 for TREE Fund!

Earlier this year, Dave assembled a bourbon package
that went for $1100 at the TREE Fund Auction, along with pledging and securing a $1500 donation from KAA.

Wow, that’s a total of $6,555 and Dave is still collecting his pledge promises!

Please take a moment to read over the following
message John sent out to his supporters after
completing his ride:

Greetings,

I wanted to give everyone an update and a challenge. I completed this year’s Tour des Trees on Saturday
August 4th  biking over 585 miles in Ohio. This year
was intense! We did back-to-back-to-back centuries
on the bike with the middle day ride over 116 miles!  Thanks again for everyone who supported me
financially this year, you guys are awesome!!!

I spent the next week at the International Society of Arboriculture’s Annual Conference and again I’m
amazed at all the research supported by the TREE Fund that comes back home with me to Lexington to share
with the community to help make our urban forest
more resilient.

Now for the challenge, next year the tour will be in Kentucky and Tennessee. I encourage all the cyclist to
join me for next year’s tour which will be in our home
state! I was impressed with all the Ohio riders who
turned out and would love to have more Kentucky
people on next year’s ride which will be held September 15th- 21st. Let me know if you’re interested and
I’ll help get you signed up.

Cheers,
