“Zacarías is an equal-opportunity satirist who won’t let any of her characters off the hook of their own prejudices.  But more central to its success is the sliver of hope the play raises that, despite our fractured political landscape, we can all laugh at our foibles — and find common ground.” - Misha Berson, Seattle Times

ALPFA SEATTLE Spotlight - Jorge Enrique Pacheco
"Poetry is in our lives"

What are your inspirations for literature? What are your upbringings?
Jorge Enrique Pacheco was born in Marianao Havana, Cuba. He is known as a poet, film industry professional, and Founder of the Seattle Latino Film Festival. Pacheco had a very close relationship with his mother until her death when he was a teenager. His father worked closely with Cuban military and grew distant. As a teenager it was difficult to understand these experiences. "Poetry helped me find answers to my questions". Pacheco continued to write poetry and found more inspiration when Octavio Paz, a Noble Prize winning poet, said to him that "You are a poet! You need to continue to write more."

What’s the importance of film? Why should people see films?
With Cinema, the films are memorable. People make connections with films through art, music and history. Pacheco encourages individuals to support film because it is the only way you'll see real art and learn about various cultures. Hollywood creates a completely different perspective about entertainment and identities.

What is your vision/goal for the Seattle Latino Film Festival?
My vision is to show the diversity of countries, cultures, traditions through cinema and help our audience understand the complexity of societies. In 10 years, we have celebrated and featured diverse latin countries, giving our audience the visibility to great talent.

What are the reactions to the community?
All communities love the festival! I've seen young professionals and second generation latinos bringing their parents to watch the films together. "It is beautiful seeing a full venue of students with parents/grandparents". The festival has helped Latinos and non-Latinos come together to enjoy the festival and learn more about Latin American cultures.

Pacheco is a Mayor's Art Award winner. Also, he was featured in CityArts Magazine, to read the article click here.
