We had a wonderful full house for the New Jersey Boys on Friday, who got our season off to an amazing start. This coming Friday (21st) we have our film night showing Goodbye, Mr Chips and then we are excited to be welcoming the exciting young professional opera company Popup Opera, returning to the Vera Fletcher Hall after their successful debut visit last year. Popup Opera’s mission is to change people’s minds about opera and bring it to the next generation. What thrills them most is when that person who said opera wasn’t their thing leaves the show beaming from ear to ear and saying maybe opera is their thing after all. This time they bring a reimagining by Peter Brook of Bizet’s famous masterpiece.

The intense and tragic tale of the four characters who lie at the heart of the original story plays out in a thought-provoking drama of unhinged love and jealousy. Actions are not without consequences, and the stark reality of the repercussions for Don José are laid bare as the story unfolds before you in a series of his tormented flashbacks.

Brook collaborated with composer Marius Constant to create a journey through much of Bizet’s memorable music, including Carmen’s ‘Habanera’, Escamillo’s Toreador Song and Don José’s Flower Song, together with powerful new passages.

This dark and thrilling piece is directed by John Wilkie. A familiar tale, but not as you'd expect it…

Due to the nature of this piece the recommended audience age is 12+
