A spectacular day!

The 2nd Annual Golf Day of The Chappell Foundation was a rip-roaring success!

Hosted at the spectacular NSW Golf Club, La Perouse, it challenged participants fully. On a gorgeous spring afternoon (Tuesday 11thSept), more than 80 golfers were driven to despair at some stage or another – not just due to the wind, but the natural vagaries of the course.

In the end, two of the top podium finishers were our sponsors:

David Grant, Lerida Grant, Andrew Varasdi and Sean Joyce from the Real Pet Food Company Group, who won the modified team Stableford competition with an incredible score of 48 points, which included FOUR 4-pointers.

In second place were the CVFR Travel Group team, led by Managing Director Ram Chhabra. The other members of Ram’s team were Apnit Rana, Mandeep Rana and their father – a veteran first-class cricketer and sprightly 81-year-old – Jagjit Rana.

In third place was the Geoff McWilliam group, who surely must not have fancied their chances, as they were missing from the prize distribution!

The dinner following the golf was MC’d by former National Rugby League player Jimmy Smith. Modest, erudite and highly accomplished (a professional journalist these days), Jimmy also conducted a highly successful LIVE auction and teased out the last cent out of the generous audience. An absolute stalwart!

TCF Co-Patron Greg Chappell said that the high levels of youth homelessness were unacceptable in our affluent country and The Chappell Foundation would strive to address that. Chairman Darshak Mehta announced that apart from “BackTrack”, the Board had decided to donate $20,000 to a Brisbane based NGO, the Ecumenical Coffee Brigade (ECB).

To round out the night, the legendary Australian cricket captain Ian Chappell interviewed his iconic team-mate, Doug Walters, about his life and times, a memorable and enjoyable end to a successful evening. View more pictures here.

ECB - our new NGO partner

The Chappell Foundation will be donating $ 20,000 to Brisbane based NGO, Ecumencial Coffee Brigade (ECB). Established 48 years ago, their mission is to send out a van on the street to service food and drink and offer a welcoming presence, every morning to Brisbane’s homeless.

The ECB van goes out each and every day between 6 – 8am visiting 3 or 4 stops in Brisbane’s CBD. The van and its volunteers serve over 33,000 meals on an annual basis to between 60 and 110 people per day. Upon request, or when possible, the van also provides clothing and blankets to assist with immediate needs.

For each person that visits the ECB van, the daily service provides routine, camaraderie and support from a peer group that can appreciate the challenges of sleeping rough or in temporary accommodation. It is also a place where they can connect with people who can refer them to essential support services to help improve their situation.

ECB have recently reached the end of two grants, in excess of $20,000, that covered the cost of their sandwiches - bread and protein (eg. meat, cheese etc.). It is their intention to use The Greg Chappell Foundation donation to cover this immediate gap.

Swami Army barracks for young Australians
The Indian Cricket team’s passionate support group, The Swami Army, will be raising funds this summer for The Chappell Foundation.

“It is a cause that resonates very strongly with young Australians of Indian heritage, who make up the overwhelming number of our members”, said Kartik Ayyalasomayajula of The Swami Army.

“Every Australian should have a roof over their heads, feel protected and safe, and it will be our endeavour to raise funds for Australia’s homeless youth, even whilst supporting the visiting Indian cricket team.”

Moises Henriques joins Board
We are pleased to welcome Sydney Sixers Captain Moises Henriques to our Board of Directors. A highly accomplished cricketer who has led NSW and played across all three cricket formats for Australia, Moises has an acute social conscience and tremendous empathy for our cause. Whilst still in the middle of his cricket career, he co-directs a company of his own and serves on the board of The Australian Cricketers Association. At 31, Moises will be our youngest Board member and, we hope, our most energetic!
