Resurrection Voices

Meet your COR Council Members

Hi, this is Steve DeRosier, the Church Council representative from the Human Concerns Team. My wife Pam and I joined Church of the Resurrection nine years ago. We live in Hartland and have four grown children (David, Austin, Morgan and Collin) living between Wisconsin and Minnesota. The last two summers have been busy for us with David’s and Austin’s weddings.  Both Pam and I are AVID Brewers fans and we are hoping for a nice playoff run this year. Go Brewers! We also enjoy traveling, taking nature walks, visiting with family and friends and cheering for all the Wisconsin sports teams.

As a member of the Human Concerns team, I am thankful for all the volunteers at COR who have assisted with the various service projects and Missions of the Month. It’s heartwarming to see what we can accomplish together, inspired by the words and deeds of Jesus. One of my favorite Bible passages is Matthew 25:40, “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’”

If you would like to learn more about the Human Concerns team, the various service projects, or the monthly missions, please talk to me before or after church.
Thank you,

- Steve

Wednesday Night Adult Bible Study
Beginning October 3

The adult Bible study on Wednesday nights beginning October 3 after evening worship at 7:15 pm will be participating in a five-week study of a book written by Max Lucado, “Anxious for Nothing.”

Do you feel weighted down with worry? Does the uncertainty and chaos of life keep you up at night? Are irrational fears your constant companion? Could you use some calm?

In this five-session video Bible study, bestselling author Max Lucado explores God’s treatment plan for anxiety found in Philippians 4:4–8. As you follow this prescription – celebrating God’s goodness, asking for his help, leaving your concerns with him, and meditation on good things – you will experience God’s peace. This is a peace that “transcends all understanding” and will help you reframe the way you look at your fears.

While anxiety is a part of life, it doesn’t have to dominate your life. With God as your helper and his promises at your side, you can sleep better tonight and smile more tomorrow. You can talk yourself off the ledge and view bad news through the lens of God’s sovereignty. You can discover a life of calm and develop tools for combating the onslaught of anxiety.

We will be watching the DVD and discussing the book on Wednesday nights after the evening service.  Anyone is welcome to drop in and watch the video with us.

If you want to order the book in advance, you can order it on Amazon ($15 hardcover / $13.59 paperback and is available on Kindle). There is also an optional study guide, but we are not going to have time to cover it in the class.

SOPHIA

SOPHIA (Stewards of Prophetic, Hopeful, Intentional Action) is a faith-based social justice organization in Waukesha County. Nine county organizations join forces as a part of WISDOM, which is the state-wide organization. Issues the organizations have worked on are prison treatment programs for people convicted of alcohol and drug offenses, affordable housing, immigration issues and health care. The Lutheran faith has had a tradition of carrying out God’s work through the social issues of the time. Financial contributions to SOPHIA help support the organization and communicate the issues with members and the general public.

Mission of the Month — Tanzania

Tanzania is our Mission of the Month for September. We are collecting donations to support the Tanzania education fund. The Word for Your Week…
The questions relate to the highlighted passage for the day.

 The Prayer of the Week
Holy God, your word feeds your people with life that is eternal. Direct our choices and preserve us in your truth, that, renouncing what is false and evil, we may live in you, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Sunday, September 23:    Jeremiah 11:18-20    James 3:13-4:3, 7-8a        Mark 9: 30-37
Why do humans concern themselves with hierarchy? What do you suppose people think they will
accomplish by being designated as ‘greatest?’ What does Jesus say about this ?

Monday, September 24:     Psalm 128         Proverbs 27:1-27           James 4:8-17
This chapter of Proverbs is full of short pieces of advice/wisdom. Which are especially true in your own life? Do any seem questionable to you? Explain.

Tuesday, September 25:     Psalm 128         Ecclesiastes 4:9-16          James 5:1-6
The teacher writes about the value of two. How have you found this to be true in your own life? Have you experienced the value of a ‘threefold cord?’ How can you use the teacher’s wisdom in your own future?

Wednesday, September 26:      Psalm 128         Ecclesiastes 5:1-20         John 8:21-38
The Bible often calls us to “fear the Lord.” What does that phrase mean to you? Does that phrase affect how you live your life? Is it something you think about day to day? Does the call to fear the Lord bring you comfort or unease?  Why ?

Thursday, September 27:     Psalm 124        Esther 1:1-21         Acts 4:13-31
This chapter illustrates the strong patriarchal attitude in the culture in which Ether’s story is written. How does this attitude continue in our culture? In other cultures? In some Christian communities of faith? How do you respond to this attitude?  (Brother Jed tends to hold this view.)

Friday, September 28:     Psalm 124        Esther 2:1-23            Acts 12:20-25
Herod learned the hard way what happens when one claims the glory which belongs to God alone. How does an appropriate sense of humility play a part in the life of a disciple of Jesus?

Saturday, September 29:     Psalm 124         Esther 3:1-15           Matthew 5:13-16
Jesus uses metaphors to describe the lives of his followers. Being a Christian means that our lives are to look a specific way. Vs. 16 is a part of our baptismal liturgy. What does Jesus mean when he says, “Let your light so shine before others, so that they may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven.” Compare this passage to Herod’s behavior in Friday’s reading.
