Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Offers a Paid Trades Apprenticeship Program
Write up from Tracey Nute from Maine Indian Ed:
I made sure to wear my GEAR UP t-shirt when I visited the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Family Day on August 25th. Located on an island off Kittery, Maine, the shipyard's civilian employees maintain and repair submarines for and with the U.S. Navy. My brother and sister-in-law both work at the shipyard, as well as three of their children and several members of their extended family.
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard offers a paid trades apprenticeship program, which leads to advanced career opportunities for high school (and postsecondary) graduates. If you have high school students who could benefit from such a program, please make them aware of this opportunity. More information is available at http://www.navsea.navy.mil/Home/Shipyards/Portsmouth.aspx.
To apply for the program, you can contact http://www.usajobs.gov/ using the "Search Jobs" tab located in the top left corner of the page. Narrow your search using a keyword or location (enter Kittery, ME and Portsmouth, NH or Point Loma, CA and San Diego, CA for the shipyard's detachment). Be sure to read the "How to Apply" section under the desired job announcement.
Thanks for representing GEAR UP Maine, Tracey!

CALL FOR GEAR UP STUDENT STORIES
All of our GEAR UP students have a story to tell. It's up to us to help them find their voice to tell it. Do you know a student who would be interested in sharing their story with GEAR UP Maine? Be it a story of success or struggle, we want to hear it and share it. It's so important now, more than ever, that our students' voices are heard. Please contact GEAR UP Maine Communication Specialist, Kayla Hopkins kayla@syntiro.org if you are interested in diving into this student story-telling adventure.
