In the last newsletter, I wrote briefly about Water Sports as a summer camp Add-on Option. We received a few replies from parents sharing how much their children enjoyed those experiences; however, the fact that we are a safe children's camp is even more important to families.

In my own childhood summer camp experience, I remember only a few activities - swimming and camping out (maybe this is true for your campers as well). I remember getting lost once (that was normal for me). But what I remember most is my cabin group counselor and the new friends I made that summer. Quality Christ-centered relationships are key components of a CC summer camp experience.

Each year as I go out on the road with invitations from Lutheran Schools to lead chapels and share about summer camp opportunities in Michigan, children often ask me if a specific summer ministry staff is returning. That relationship is important to your campers - your children. And it is these summer ministry staff who not only lead and play with the campers, but also present Jesus Christ and His forgiveness to them.

Below I will share a little more about the Add-on Option of Swim Lessons - notice the pictures of relationships being built during lessons, and the celebration of the victories won, when deep water bands were obtained.

Over the next few newsletters, I will take the opportunity to share some of the Add-on Options we are planning for 2019.

Dr. Craig "Doc" Oldenburg
Camp Director

PS...please remember to direct someone you know to serve on Camp Concordia's staff during the 2019 season.

Swim Lessons Add-on Option

Camp Concordia introduced the Swim Lesson Add-on Option in 2017. How exciting it is to see summer campers work hard to learn basic swimming skills, and many go on to earn their deep water wrist band (green). Also, it is exciting to see college age summer ministry staff hard at work helping campers gain those new skills.  Staff too feel the victory when a camper gets their basic stroke. We have even had Jr. Counselors, who are competitive swimmers, assist staff in helping campers gain these basic strokes.

In 2019, this Add-on Option is available with Journey, Quest, and Trails camp sessions.

Summer Ministry Staff

Encourage a young adult you know to be a paid summer ministry staff in 2019.

For the 2019 summer season, Camp Concordia intends to hire:
  • 4 kitchen staff
  • 14 cabin group counselors (6 male, 8 female)
  • 1 maintenance & grounds person
  • 1 health officer (Position filled: can a health officer be nicknamed Pyro?)
  • 1 program coordinator (Position filled Mustard is returning!)
  • 1 events coordinator (Position filled: Do you know Skup?)
Your encouragement to those adults makes all the difference in them seeing themselves as valuable in this mentoring role with campers.
