Who's ready for a farmers' market?? We know our vendors and producers are! All the area markets were cancelled last week due to the threat of Florence and the uncertainty of the forecast. Our vendors would definitely appreciate your business this week.

We only have two regular season markets remaining this season. Can you believe it? Let's show these vendors that we really want them to return next year and help them finish the season strong! Plan to join us this Wednesday, and bring a friend.
Right now we're seeing summer and fall crops overlap, so we are bound to see a bit of both from Cullipher Farm this week.
Something new!  It's fall, y'all! And that means it's pumpkin spice time! Dessert Classics is bringing Pumpkin Cakes! They will be available in 8-inch, 10-inch and cupcakes. The will also have Pumpkin Pie! And that's not all...For those who love cheesecake, they will have both Vanilla Cheesecakes and Pumpkin Cheesecakes! These are 3-inches high and come in a 6-inch or 8-inch size. If you'd like them to put one aside for you, please feel free to call them at 757-689-4642. Shown here are pumpkin cakes in the 10-inch size and a vanilla cheesecake in the 6-inch size.

Learn More About Our Vendors

Can you believe we just have two regular season markets left? Well, for one of our vendors, this will be the last market of the year. So now is the time to stock up on local raw honey, creamed honeys, and jalapeño honey from Sunshine Farm & Apiary to get you through the off-season! And don't forget some handcrafted soaps for yourself or a friend. Their handmade honeypots are a thoughtful holiday gift, and they even come with a gift box. You can also pick up the book The ABC's of Honeybees for the little one in your life to help them understand more about honey bees and their importance to the world's food supply. Please stop by Jennifer's table on Wednesday and thank her for a great season at HBFM! We're so happy she's been a part of it!

Recipe of the Week - Courtesy of Chef Sydney Meers!

Our recipe of the week always highlights ingredients that are in-season and available at the market. This week we feature a recipe provided to us by esteemed chef and HBFM vendor Sydney Meers. Look for him under the orange tent, offering up all kinds of neo-Southern and gourmet goodness with his Cowboy Syd's Products, including his Country Ham, D'Lish Sauce and Heirloom Grits used in this recipe. Pick up your pork chops from Full Quiver Farm

We present this to you unedited, in "Sydney-Speak."

Full Quiver Farm’s Pork Chops on Cowboy Syd’s PoNo Country Ham & Creamy Grits with Cowboy Syd’s D-Lish sauce

1-chops: take the chops and lightly salt and pepper each, rub some D’Lish sauce on them, wrap them tight and refrigerate for a couple of hours or for a day.  when ready remove from fridge and let come to room temp, unwrap and rub some more sauce and set aside

2-grits:  take 2 cups liquid (I like whole milk) in a heavy pot and bring to a boil, rain in the grits slowly stiring all the while and then reduce to simmer, place lid on pot and check every 5 to 12 minutes.

once the grits start to loosen and start the creaming you will need to add more liquid, 1 cup each time and continue to cook until the raw flavor has gone, it takes like creamy grits with a great corn flavor and still will have some grit to it as well

at the end take some of Syd’s PoNo City Ham, slice thin and gently tear apart and stir into the grits (because the ham is salt cured don’t season the girts till after you taste them with the ham added) and then adjust your seasoning if needed

3-cooking:  while grits are getting ready which can take from 30 to 40 minutes start grilling your pork chops.  Grill to medium rare (as once done you have 10 to 15 minutes of carry over cooking and you don’t want this delicious meat to be over cooked) but no more than medium

4-plating: take your plate, place creamy grits on the plate, set the chop on the grits and pour a little more sauce on the side, if you can slice fresh heirloom tomatoes on the side and even a grilled peach is great with this dish
