Boston Rock In The Heart Of The City: Thursday Night's Boston Proper

Boston Emissions celebrates another rebirth this month as the long-running local music championing radio program from the FM dial (WBCN, WZLX) moves into the next wave of Boston music programming and promotion and goes online at BostonEmissions.com.

New music series, Boston Proper, launched last month (thanks to Jed Gottlieb for the preview) at Hennessy's Upstairs on Union St, Boston (across from City Hall, on all T lines). I am happy to have rock shows back in the heart of the city. We return this Thursday with three new New England-based bands:

123 ASTRONAUT from Providence in their first Boston show (featuring Jeff Robbins from one of my all-time favorite Boston bands, ORBIT), Boston's melodic rock trio, SET FIRE -- familiar faces and sounds from some Boston rock luminaries, and BAABES, a brand new trash rock outfit from Boston (see profiles and links below).

123 ASTRONAUT - A raw-and-riffy guitar-based indie-rock power-trio based in Providence, RI. Jeff Robbins is probably best-known as the front person for Orbit, a band which released 3 albums on A&M Records, scored a Modern Rock top 10 song, and toured extensively throughout the US and Canada–including a stint on the Lollapalooza tour. With Eric Hastings on drums and Keith John Benjamin on bass, the band’s energetic live performances have been earning them a reputation as one of the area’s best new bands. Their debut EP, entitled The Friction, was mixed by Hugo Nicolson whose credits include Radiohead, Beck, Björk, and Father John Misty.

SET FIRE - A three-piece hard rock band from Boston featuring Jess Collins (Mellow Bravo, The Static Dynamic, Petty Morals) on vocals and keys, Jim Healey (Shatner, Black Thai, We're All Gonna Die) on vocals and guitar, and Rob Davol (Cocked n' Loaded) on drums. Formed in 2017, the group emphasizes the interplay and harmonies of a 2-vocalist dynamic atop its melodic and heavy sound.
