September Newsletter for Members
BEGINNING IN MARCH, WE WILL BE HOLDING OUR MEETINGS ON THE 4TH TUESDAY OF THE MONTH.

This change of meeting date has been forced on us by the Bouverie Hall Management team as they endeavour to ensure the funding of the hall continues to meet the outgoings.

The increasing costs involved in the maintenance of the building and the excellent facilities it offers to the community has meant the lettings policy needed to maximise on bookings.

As we booked for one session a month, they have understandably had to offer the Monday evening slot to a booking which wanted to use the hall every Monday evening in the month.

The Arts Society Pewsey Vale committee

We urgently need a volunteer to support the Sound System team at our monthly lectures in the Bouverie Hall.

This help does not mean you have to be a committee member - however we really do need someone with experience with audio systems to give support when needed.

Please do help - Colin has many hats on the committee and would greatly appreciate someone to be a back-up for the sound systems at our meetings.

Please contact Colin Paul if you are willing to offer your expertise occasionally.

Calligeofiguresques: an introduction to Islamic Art and Design

In Europe, in both a religious and secular context, we are used to art which is representational, and it is commonly held that Islamic art is non-representational. This lecture introduces Islamic art through its three most widely appreciated non-representational strands, Arabic calligraphy (the Islamic art form par excellence), geometry, and the arabesque. However, it also explores the figural side of Islamic art, and shows how widespread figural art really is – even, most surprisingly, in some religious settings. James Allan presents this talk.

COVENTRY CATHEDRAL

Following on from the popular Society lecture we will be visiting Coventry Cathedral which was opened in 1962 following the bombing of the city in 1940.  Standing beside the ruins of the Medieval Cathedral, the new Cathedral, designed by architect Sir Basil Spence, contains some of the finest examples of 1950's and 60's art and architecture in the country.

STONELEIGH ABBEY

Stoneleigh Abbey, the ancestral home of the Leigh family, is a country house steeped in history.
Founded in 1154 as a Cistercian monastic house on a land grant from King Henry II, it was later converted into a comfortable family home.  This former monastery has connections to Queen Victoria, Prince Charles and Jane Austen.  The parkland was designed by Sir Humphrey Repton.

Making Art Matter: Clifford & Rosemary Ellis

Victoria Art Gallery,  Bridge Street, Bath, BA2 4AT until 25 November

This exhibition celebrates the work of Clifford and Rosemary Ellis, whose artistic partnership spanned five decades. Their creative output included iconic book cover and poster designs and wonderful watercolours recording the Bath Blitz.

Clifford Ellis is perhaps best known for his work as head of the pioneering Bath Academy of Art. Based at Corsham Court from 1946, the Academy had a pioneering programme, with some of the best artists of the day teaching in an environment where the emphasis was on training future art teachers.

The Ellis Family Archive that was given to the Victoria Art Gallery in 2016 is shared with the Bath Record Office. Amongst the gems of the collection are the wartime diary of Rosemary Ellis, posters designed in the 1930s for clients such as Shell and BP, and book cover artwork for the iconic Collins New Naturalistsseries (1945-82). Many of these items feature in this exhibition.
