Sunday's Message by Pastor Ryan
"Oikos:  The Posture of Love"
Matthew 22:34-40
Don't Miss These Opportunities!
  • New Members Class:  Are you new to the AACRC or interested in its ministry? Would you like to join the AACRC by becoming a member? Are you curious what membership means and involves for you and your family? Pastor Ryan will be leading a class the 1st and 3rd Wednesday nights from 7-8:30 throughout the fall. If you are interested, please reach out to him at rboes@aacrc.org or call the office.
  • Embodying the Text:  Hey Friends. You are invited to an exciting opportunity this October. On Saturday, October 13, Dr. Travis West will be here to lead a workshop on enacting the story of scripture. The group will be invited into the story of Exodus 17 to explore its meaning and how it is we interpret the text with our whole selves. Part of this group may also perform their interpretation in worship on Sunday. Space is limited as we only have 25-30 slots available so don’t wait to sign up for this incredible opportunity of discipleship and bible study. Contact Pastor Ryan if you are interested at rboes@aacrc.org. Or call the office at 734-665-0105.
    • Housing will be needed for 3-4 of our guests from this group.  If this is a need you can help with, please contact Pastor Ryan, rboes@aacrc.org, or the church office, office@aacrc.org.
  • CROP Hunger Walk--September 30: The 44th annual Ann Arbor CROP Hunger Walk is just two weeks away! Please consider participating in this event which will help alleviate hunger and poverty around the world as well as in our own community. It’s not too late to sign up to be either a walker or a sponsor (or both).  Please stop by the table in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday to do so.  Each walker will be matched with one or two sponsors from our congregation. We especially need more walkers, but also welcome more sponsors. Thanks for your participation!
Pizza Night this Wednesday, September 19 at 5:45pm!
Come and fellowship while enjoying some pizza together before the start of our programs.  All are welcome!
Announcements:
  • Staff News: In alignment with Oikos and the budget approved for FY 18-19, Council affirmed the hiring of Mary Admiraal to fill half of the hours allotted for youth ministries, as the Children’s Ministry Coordinator.
  • Reverse Offering of Names: This past Sunday each person and family had opportunity to take a name of a student here at AACRC to pray for throughout the year.  If you were not here or did not have opportunity to take a name, there are extras in a basket in the church office.
House Groups:
House Groups have started, but there is always room to welcome more. Groups meet Sundays (during discipleship hour), Wednesday evening, or on a weekend (Friday or Saturday). If this is something you’ve been thinking about, please contact Ross Weener.
Council Briefs from September 10:

Bill VanderMolen started the meeting with devotions from 1 Corinthians 15. Council then read a responsive prayer as we centered ourselves in worship and prepared to do work for AACRC. We then proceeded to the agenda with the following items:
  • The council reviewed the final financial report for the fiscal year 2017-2018, and recent giving trends to the general fund:
    • Total expenditures were 2% less than budget, but total revenue came up short from total expenditures by -2.4%.
    • Giving over the summer months of 2018 (June/July/August) tracked higher than the same time 2017.
    • (See tables below)
  • Arnie Geldermans, representing the hiring team, reviewed updated job descriptions for the worship leader team candidate couple, budget scenarios for the position, and a plan of activities for the weekend of October 6-7 when we visit and fellowship with the candidate couple.
  • Pastor Ryan gave an Oikos update with accomplishments and deliverables over the past two months.
  • Council approved Bev Kraker as the delegate to Classis Lake Erie on October 6.
After the joined council meeting, Shepherding Elders and Service Deacons continued with their meeting.

Blessings,
Bill VanderMolen on behalf of Council

Parish Nurse News:
I recently read this article by Parker Palmer and thought it too rich not to share...may we embrace the "layers" and not the "litter":

We lament with those who have been affected by the recent natural disasters. Click to see how World Renew is responding to Hurricane Florence and Super Typhoon Mangkhut.
"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging."  Psalm 46:1-3
