Actsafe Injury Prevention Week

November 5th – 9th, 2018

To celebrate Actsafe’s 20th anniversary of helping to keep workers safe, we’re launching a new initiative, the Actsafe Injury Prevention Week (AIP Week.)

The goal of our annual campaign is to spread awareness of the leading causes of injury to BC’s motion picture industry workers, and to provide shareable tips, tools and resources to help prevent these injuries.

Each year will focus on a different theme. 2018’s theme, Back Here, Safety Matters highlights the hazards of material handling around trucks, namely the loading and unloading of them.

Every day during AIP Week we’ll highlight a different topic within truck safety and share tips, suggest extra steps to reduce injury and provide relevant industry resources. This is your opportunity to take action and optimize your work culture. Together let's shift the behaviour of workers, supervisors, employers and equipment suppliers to reduce preventable truck-related injuries. Crowd Safety Workshop: Combining Math, Physics, Psychology and Behaviours to Achieve Safe Outcomes

Recreational marijuana officially became legal in Canada on Oct. 17, 2018.

Impairment from substance use can cause physical and behavioural changes that affect a person's ability to work safely. Workplace impairment as an occupational health and safety issue is of increasing concern to British Columbia employers, workers, and other stakeholders.

Employers are encouraged to develop policies and procedures that address impairment in the workplace. An impairment policy that takes a fitness-to-work approach to impairment can help you to meet your workplace safety obligations. You should also communicate your impairment policy clearly to workers.

Concussion Awareness Training Tool Online is developing a new concussion tool for workers and workplaces! Talk about your experience with concussion and receive a $10 gift card. 

Due to high demand and current gaps in addressing concussion among adults (19 to 64 years old), the BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit, in partnership with WorkSafeBC and the Provincial Health Services Authority, are in the process of developing a new concussion toolkit for workers and workplaces. CATT for Workers and Workplaces (WW) will include an e-learning module and relevant resources that will provide easy access to current best practices for concussion recognition, treatment, and management tailored for workers and their families, and workplaces including employers, members of safety associations, unions, and joint occupational health and safety committees.

The BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit are seeking to interview employees who have sustained a concussion and recovered to return to work or are in the return to work process (in all industries), as well as experts in concussion awareness, prevention, and treatment in the workplace.  Those who complete an interview will receive a $10 gift card. The deadline for participation in interviews and discussion groups is the end of November. Beyond that, dates for discussion groups will be decided upon based on the group’s availability.

Have you worked in a non-administrative position in a theatre or entertainment environment for at least 2 full years and are aged between 18 - 40 years old? 

Our friends down at Ohio University are conducting research regarding vitamin D deficiency status, depression symptom severity, and health-related quality of life in those who work in the theatre industry. 

Conducting the study is Darby Hooten, Master of Science in Athletic Training program. This will be one of the first studies to identify the presence of these factors in theatre workers. If you have a spare 10 minutes, this survey is anonymous and you can start the survey using the button below.

Reducing the risk of propane explosions in food trucks

Explosions in food trucks can occur when propane leaks from equipment or a fuel tank, builds up inside a truck, and ignites. Food truck explosions have occurred in multiple locations in Canada and worldwide. The risk grows as the number of food trucks continues to rise, although the risk is preventable. This bulletin discusses how explosion hazards can develop and how food truck owners and operators can reduce the risks.
