--Give the Gift of Water Today!

Dear Companion,

When was the last time you were thirsty and could not get clean water?

Shockingly, this is the reality for more than half of the population of the world. According to the most recent statistics from the World Health Organization, 30%, or 2.1 billion people worldwide, lack access to safe, readily available water. As many as 60% of the world’s people, or 4.5 billion, lack safely managed sanitation. In Ghana, West Africa, as much as 20% of the population does not have access to drinking water safe from contamination.

As Companions of St. Anthony we hear the cry of the poor in their thirst for clean, safe drinking water. To bring them help, we have set a goal of digging three new wells, providing clean water to God’s people in Ghana. Your help can make the difference!

Our Challenge: We've identified three wells that we can drill this winter, and we are hoping to raise $18,000 by October 31 so we can proceed with the work. To date we've raised $6,000, enough for one well. Thank you to everyone who has given already.

To help us complete the project, a generous benefactor will make a challenge grant matching every dollar given before October 31 up to the cost of a full well! That means if we can raise $6,000 we'll receive a matching grant of $6,000, giving us a total of $12,000!

Companion, your gift today will help us reach our goal of digging three wells for the health and dignity of our brothers and sisters in Ghana.

Project Details

The first well is in the village of Mafi Akukokpo, located in the Volta Region of Ghana. The village is home to about 70 inhabitants, citizens of Mafi Akukokpo are predominantly peasant farmers. In 2008 the village established a basic school, which is a twenty minute walk for the children. As the heartbreaking video above shows, the only source of water for these children—and all residents—is a small pond. Full of mud and sticks, this water is clearly unsuitable for drinking. Yet Felicia, Aziedorme, a mother of four, says "we can’t be too sure if it isn’t causing us any diseases but this is the only water we have. And we will continue to use it.”

In addition, we would like to place a well on the campus of St. Ambrose College of Education in Dormaa Akwamu, Sunyani. Established in 2009, St. Ambrose's mission is to train highly qualified and dedicated teachers for the many schools in Ghana that do not have teachers. The Principal, Fr. George Kwasi Kyeremeh, told us St. Ambrose currently has one well but truly needs a second to supply adequate water to the campus.
Lastly, we’d like to put a well at the St. Charles Lwanga School in the village of Watchman, Ghana. There, like in Mafi Akukokpo, the school and village need a well. Established in 2011, the St. Charles Lwanga School serves children who might not get any education otherwise.

Companion, for $6,000 we can dig a well and change the lives of so many!
