What's New at NBO

Fall has made its appearance with the shorter days and already longer nights. In the San Francisco Bay Area where I live, we’ve crossed the 50/50 line. The light looks completely different from only a few weeks ago and I’m acutely aware of the difference.

While the season was changing, at NBO we have been busy as usual. The Fall NBO Magazine is in the mail. If you are a member it will arrive shortly. There is a wonderful article on Flo Hoppe, a past Lifetime Achievement Awardee.

In our Spring 2018 Issue there was an interesting article, Demystifying The Jurying Process . We wanted to share this with our OU readers because we think it can help explain the process a juror goes through when reviewing submissions. Take a look to find out how Bruce Pepich, Jane Sauer and Lloyd Herman answered the five questions posed to them.

September’s Featured Guild is the Tampa Bay Basketmakers Guild.  They were founded in 1991 and meet monthly. Their “Bag Lady” project is something you’re going to want to learn more about. This vibrant guild also believes strongly in community service. To find out more about this project and all their activities, keep reading!

Tampa Bay Basketmakers Guild
by Emily Stehle

The Tampa Bay Basketmakers Guild (TBBG) was founded in 1991 to perpetuate the craft and art of basketry. The 60 members are primarily from the state of Florida but the Guild has many “snowbirds” from across the United States, Canada and England. This membership reflects a diverse scope of weaving skills and experiences.

The mission of the Guild is multi-faceted:
  • Cultivate an interest in the art of basket weaving
  • Encourage public awareness of the art and craft of basketry
  • Support and guide members in expanding and enhancing their weaving techniques
  • Establish a network of weavers for sharing topics of interest
The Guild meets monthly on the second Saturday from September to May at Pinellas County’s Heritage Village, a living history museum. Guild members volunteer as docents and demonstrate basket weaving and answer visitors’ questions about the many types of baskets on display at the McMullen House. They also teach basket weaving to the Junior Docents, the middle school and high school students who volunteer during the summer months.

The monthly meetings focus on:
  • weaving projects
  • sharing basketry knowledge
  • learning new techniques
  • showcasing completed projects (Drag and Brag)
  • socializing with members
  • supporting community charity organizations

The “Bag Lady” weaving challenge is a popular annual event. Members place a variety of traditional and nontraditional weaving material in a paper bag. These are distributed to participants who have three months to design and weave a unique creation. The fabrications are revealed and returned to the person who originally stuffed the bag. Over the years, the “Bag Lady” baskets were exhibited at various public venues.

Service to the community is a key factor for the Guild, which has woven and filled gift baskets for women’s shelters, care facilities and VA hospitals. Collection activities are ongoing for children’s clothing (Clothes for Kids), food (Pack a Snack) and craft supplies for art teachers. The Guild hosts meetings for the art teachers and provides projects, instructions and materials for their classroom use.

Members go out into the community demonstrating basket weaving at the Florida State Fair and teach free mini-workshops at Florida CraftArt, a statewide nonprofit organization based in St. Petersburg.
