NOTES FROM THE STACKS
The Collier County Public Library just finished off our best summer to date . . . and happily without any interruptions by Mother Nature!

The Library collaborated with our Parks & Recreation Division to bring the Library’s Summer Reading Program to five summer camp locations throughout Collier County.  Not to be outdone, the Marco Island Museum’s summer camp also participated!

These partnerships helped boost summer reading participation, while simultaneously addressing the dreaded “summer slide,” a term used to refer to students’ loss of academic knowledge during the summer months.  Current research shows that reading four or more books can stop the summer slide.

So how many books did our 300 participating campers read?  3,353 books!  At an average of over 10 books per camper, these students started school ahead of their peers.  Outstanding job!

Summer may have officially come to a close, but our Youth & Teen Services staff are hard at work for next summer’s plan to expand our partnerships.

More Opportunities + More Students Reading = Greater Reading Gains!

TEEN READ WEEK

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) established a national initiative in 1988 to encourage teens to read and to explore different literary genres. Since then it is held annually in October by schools and public libraries.

The theme for 2018 is “It’s written in the Stars…READ!” To promote this year’s theme, various locations have created programs and displays highlighting Teen Read Week beginning October 7th through the 13th.  We encourage our young patrons to explore our programs and to browse through our diverse reading list.
