Dear Students, Families, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of ASB School,

As I mentioned at Curriculum Night, this past summer our faculty read The Innovator’s Mindset by George Couros.  In the book, Couros speaks to the “why” of education – why we do what we do.  I love his quote, “I believe education’s why is to develop learners and leaders who will create a better present and future…When forward-thinking schools encourage today’s learners to become creators and leaders, I believe they, in turn, will create a better world.” Isn’t that our greatest hope for our children?  That they will work to make the world a better place for not just themselves, but for all whom they encounter?

On Monday, we met for the first time this year in our school families and our 8th graders were excellent models of being creators and leaders for a better world.  October is National Bullying Prevention Month and to kick it off, our 8th grade leaders led school families in a lesson around conflict, mean moments, and real bullying.  In preparation for this lesson, the 8th graders time both in class and on retreat preparing, including working in pairs to write original prayers that would be shared with their school families and directly tying our actions towards others to the Gospel message of Jesus.  Every student in the school signed their school family’s prayer as a commitment to treating each other with respect, compassion, and love.  On Wednesday, October 24th, we will participate in National Unity Day to show that at ASB, we are united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.  On National Unity Day, all students are invited to wear orange in honor of this important commitment in our community.

Not only did the 8th graders demonstrate exceptional leadership this week, but we also celebrated our first group of monthly student awards.  These awards are given based on nominations by the teachers and the students nominated excelled in demonstrating our Student Learning Expectations in the month of September.  Congratulations to all of our recipients! Check out their picture below in ASB news!

We hope you will join us tonight for our second annual Math Night!  We will begin in the Fellowship Hall at 6:00 PM, then move into classrooms for some hands-on math fun.  Math 4 Love and the UW Experimental Math Lab will be here as well.  All students and parents welcome and we hope to see you there!

Finally, I would like to thank parents Julie Gunter and Alethea Westover.  These two ladies have created the Diverse Learners Parent Group in order to support parents with students who have diverse learning needs.  This group will meet monthly and all are welcome.  Check out more information below in the Parent Board section of the newsletter.  I commend their work as it complements our mission of meeting all students’ needs as well as erasing the stigmas that often come with diverse learning in schools.  I encourage you to join them and learn more about how parents can be support to each other.

F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”  I love fall, especially in Seattle.  As we start October, the leaves changing, the chillier wind, and the much needed rain solidifies the end of summer.  While I love summer, I also love the full swing of school once October hits.  The Fitzgerald quote reminds me of that – we have finished month one and school has really started.  Let’s embrace it, enjoy it, and learn from it each day.

Have a wonderful rest of the week and weekend.

Best,
Kathleen Conklin

Basketball Assessments for Middle School Students

In middle school, basketball teams are split into varsity and junior varsity divisions. This requires an assessment process that allows assessors to determine the best fit for each player.  Assessments will be held on Monday, October 15, and Tuesday, October 16 and Monday, October 22 and Tuesday, October 23.  In order to be eligible for the varsity team, students need to attend at least one of the assessment nights, and two would be preferred.  The assessors will be looking at a wide variety of the skills including, ball handling, passing, shooting and court awareness.  This process is designed to place each student on the team that will allow them to have the most success during the basketball season and we strive to create an environment that is low stress and lots of fun. Parents and coaches are not allowed in the gym to watch the assessments.  Please see our Athletic Handbook here regarding assessments and policies on page 12.

It's time to apply for PreK & Kindergarten!

Are you a current ASB family with a 4-or-5-year-old at home? Current school families have priority enrollment, but we do need a completed application for each student who will be new to ASB in PreK or Kindergarten. (If your child is a current ASB PreK student moving onto Kindergarten here at ASB, you do NOT need to complete an application).

Completed applications should turned into Admissions Director Kelley Kane, ideally prior to the 10/25 Open House.

Do you have a preschooler attending somewhere other than ASB?

We need help reaching out to local preschools about our Open House events. If you are able to deliver marketing materials to your child's preschool (posters and fliers), please email email Admissions Director Kelley Kane.

Can you help before or during Open House events?

Thank you to those who have already offered to help publicize our Open House events! We are looking for volunteers to:
  • Distribute posters to local businesses & community bulletin boards     (I will provide a list of businesses who've agreed to this).
  • Distribute yard signs around a 3-mile radius from ASB (I will provide a list of approved sites).
  • Place an Open House sign in your front yard. This identifies you as a proud ASB family! Please let me know if you would consider this, and I will send you home with a sign.
  • Help during the events as a Parent Ambassador, 8:30am - 10:30am on 10/25, 11/14 and/or 1/31/19.
These are hugely impactful ways to get your volunteer hours in! Please email Admissions Director Kelley Kane if you can help. Thank you!

As we enter the season of Fall and the days begin to get shorter, Extended Care will start locking the doors to our facility earlier in the afternoon.  As we do throughout every Fall and Winter, we will start to lock the doors to our facility around 4:15-4:30 pm.  We do this to ensure the safety of everyone in our program.  If you find that the doors are locked upon your arrival to Extended Care, please ring the doorbell or knock on the door and one of our staff members will be with you shortly to answer the door.  Thank you for understanding and thank you for helping to keep ASB Extended Care safe.

On Friday, October 12, ASB School is closed for a faculty in-service.  Extended Care will also be CLOSED on this day as some members of the Extended Care staff will be participating in the in-service.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

If you have any questions about Extended Care, please do not hesitate to contact Dylan Pouley or Kai Bond we are happy to assist you in whatever way that we can.  If you email extended@asbschool.org that email account will forward your email to both Kai and Dylan.

Extended Care reminders:
  • Extended Care opens each morning at 7:00am.
  • Extended Care closes at 5:45pm each afternoon.
  • There is NO EXTENDED CARE on October 12, 2018

St. Bridget Parish:
Are you curious about the Catholic Faith?
