Minister of Administration

“So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.”

Matthew 7:17-20

When warning people about the prophets of His day, Jesus compared these individuals to fruit. The good prophets produced healthy fruit with their words and promises; the false prophets produced harmful fruit that led their followers toward destruction. When Jesus gave this warning, He was not referring only to doomsday-speaking mad men. In His day, prophets were people who might give counsel or advice; they might help families make tough decisions; or they could be using the gift of discernment to point groups in a particular direction.

Today, the public education industry has subsumed much of the role of the prophet in the ancient world. Some of this is by necessity. Today’s world is much more complex and technological than the social life surrounding Jesus. The common folks of that era might have hoped for supernatural advice about when to plant crops, who their children should marry, or how to apply the Torah to an unfortunate situation. Prophets could help with each of these ancient scenarios. However, prophets aren’t as helpful in regards to many of today’s difficult problems: prophetic insight won’t help us use that accounting software at work; it isn’t terribly useful for filling out the 1040; and it only has limited effectiveness for assisting with the new piece of engineering equipment in the factory. Unfortunately, as society shifts, we have leaned more and more on the public education sector for answers. The prophets of public education make promises that children in their tutelage will have “twenty-first century skills,” “career readiness,” and become great “global citizens” if we only follow their methodologies and procedures. Sadly, while the public school education fruit is good for some, it is poison for others.

Public education has some positives: it equitably meets the basic needs of people that attend and provides diverse opportunities to help students realize their gifts. This is made possible by public school teachers who expend extraordinary effort dedicating their lives to help children find success in society. However, the system also brings with it extraordinary negatives, and many of these are beyond the control of the teachers. By law, any type of religious devotion is illegal if faculty are involved. Any academic message that offends the smallest segment of society, even if true, is eventually censored. Moreover, with large schools, regulating negative behaviors such as profanity and lewdness becomes nearly impossible as school officials struggle day-to-day with drugs and violence.

Education was never supposed to be this way or have this role in society, and I am thankful that New Testament Christian Church supports Keokuk Christian Academy as part of The Mission. Our environment intentionally reflects Biblical values and includes worship to God. Our teachers can boldly teach the truth without being hampered by relativism. And, while we have our share of ornery students, I am thankful that we are small enough that we can keep the crimes and travesties of the public schools away from our youth as they develop into Godly men and women.

However, all of this takes a significant amount of resources. Iowa public schools spend $6,591 on average to educate a single student in a year. At KCA, we scrape by with a tuition of $2550. This happens because we have parents that believe in our program, teachers with missionary-mindsets that make sacrifices for our students, and a wonderful host church! We are grateful for the financial contributions, volunteer hours, prayers, and shared resources.  On behalf of KCA, I want to say “thank you” for your decades of support for making Christian education possible in this region!

                                                                                                  Sue Abegglen
                                                                                            Missions Team Leader

Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel. ... — Ephesians 6:19 (NIV)

Missionaries are regular people who need encouragement; they fear pain and rejection as much as anyone else. When faced with opposition, they need God’s strength to help them stand firm.  They have families to worry about and care for.  Family they left behind and homesickness to battle. They see many needs of the people they are ministering to and wonder where the funds will be coming from.

How can those who are still at home encourage those God has called to be missionaries? Not everyone is called to be a missionary in a cross-cultural setting or away from home.  But there are things we can do to encourage those who are.   Individuals’ hearts also need to be open and receptive to God’s truth.  Below are some suggestions taken from Christian resources to help in knowing some of the best ways we can be praying for our missionaries both locally and abroad.

Pray …
  • That God will open doors of ministry, blessing partnerships and friendships.
  • That those who serve will be led by the Holy Spirit and recognize open‑door opportunities.
  • That God will lead His people past barriers to hearts ready to receive His Word and that His Word will spread.
Finally, dear brothers and sisters, we ask you to pray for us. Pray that the Lord’s message will spread rapidly and be honored wherever it goes, just as when it came to you. — 2 Thessalonians 3:1 (NLT)

Pray ...
  • For strength and stamina as missionaries encounter antagonistic spiritual forces (Ephesians 6:10–18).
  • That people will resist Satan’s plans to obstruct the spread of the gospel (James 4:7).
  • That God’s Word will indeed spread rapidly and be honored wherever it goes.

Please check out the list of missions that New Testament supports and pray for these missionaries. If you have extra change in your pocket, drop some in the jar at the Coffee Corner to add a little extra to the monthly checks we send.
The extra donations for November & December will go to CDEM, Alberto Rivas and the school in Buenos Aires, Dominican Republic.

Commission Coffee Corner

Lead Pastor

Pray then like this:
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name.
Your Kingdom come, Your Will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our debts,
As we also have forgiven our debtors
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
Matt. 6:6-13

Jesus gave His disciples and readers of the Word, an example to follow when we pray.  These verses give us six  requests that emphasize our priorities.  The first three look at God’s Supremacy and the second three look at our needs.

1. The first request is to treat God as Sovereign and with the Highest Honor.

2. We are directed to pray for God’s Kingdom to advance on earth. At the same time we are called to work for that advancement as well.

3. The third request is to follow the revealed will of God.  Living obediently and walking in righteousness is pleasing to God

4.  The fourth petition is about our daily, physical needs.

5.  This one specifically calls us out to continue our restoration of personal fellowship with God.  To be more specific, this is talking about forgiveness.  We must also know that when others seek our forgiveness, we are expected to forgive them as well.

6. The last one here is asking us to be led not into temptation.  God does not lead us to sin, but will allow us to be tested. Also, God does allow us to make our own choices.  This verse is basically saying, “Allow us to be spared from difficult circumstances that would tempt us to sin”.  Don’t pray to have great testing, but rather, pray for the deliverance from them.

Keeping these six points in mind when preparing for a time of prayer will help to express prayers that are both aligned with God’s Will and in accordance with His Holy Word.

Shoebox Party at KidZRocK Nov. 7
HiSKidZ will be filling shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child on Wednesday, November 7 during KidZRocK. HiSKidZ love shoebox night and we love it when they serve. If you would like to donate items to fill a box, or have some items left over from your box, we would love to have them.  Parents, please remember to bring items for shoeboxes to KidZRocK on November 7.

This amazing group of sponsors and 5th-6th graders attended Superstart in St Louis last month where we were challenged to share, with others, our stories of what God has done for us. It was a great weekend. Pray with us that HiSKidZ will continue to be challenged to share their stories and that God will work in and through them in mighty ways.

Thanks to Frank and Ruth Gayton for donating these  recycled medicine bottles to HiSKidZ! We quickly put them to good use as a way to raise funds to help a family in Russia who has recently lost their home to fire. the family has 6 children and HiSKidZ wanted to help. We sent the bottles home at KidZRocK and asked HiSKidZ to return them one week later. In that one week we collected a little over $330. We are praising God for the caring and generous spirit He is growing in HiSKidZ!

While we like for students to start with us in August, the second best time to join our school community is after the Christmas break in January. If you are looking for a solid education that incorporates the Bible and a great community, call KCA today at 319-524-5752 to enroll your child!

At 10:30am:
Standard Bible Publishing Lesson: God's World & God's People: Genesis
Study leader: Cullen Hartley

This Fall, lessons focus on the uniquely creative and re-creative activity of the Lord God. The lessons are drawn from the Bibles book of beginnings. Genesis is rightly associated with Gods work as creator. But, Genesis also emphasizes God's power to re-create and to address what happened when His "very good" creation (Genesis 1:31) became very bad due to sin.

For more information about our ABF ministry, please see Chris Mickelson or contact the NTCC Office 319-524-8727

At 6pm:
Sunday Night Prayer

Join New Testament Christian Church on Sunday nights, from 6pm to 7pm, for a come-and-go-as-you-please time of prayer. This service focuses on seeking our God together as the Church through singing, scripture reading, and praying in groups, with a friend, or by yourself. For more information, please see an NTCC staff member.

Small Groups are currently meeting at various locations throughout the tri-state area. Spiritual growth continually occurs in small group cultures, and we encourage every member of NTCC to plug into a group or ABF.

God uses small group studies to help us BELIEVE, BELONG and BECOME all He desires for us as His body.  Small groups are a great way to connect and be a part of what God is doing in lives here at NTCC.
