TRACTION: Helping young people go places

TRACTION empowers young people in need and we've mentored 629 participants in our first 3 years, helping them experience a sense of success, build the skills and confidence to re-engage positively in the learning process and the community.

Term Three Wrap Up

Another 9 schools and community groups participated in programs at the Redlands, Brisbane Southside and Logan workshops. The new Scenic Rim workshop in Beaudesert kicked off and our Mobile programs reached new communities in need.

For the first time, TRACTION was delivered on a school campus throughout Term 3. Students from Glenala State High School completed the Bike Build program with the support of TRACTION mentors at the school's own 'Trade Skills Centre'.

For the second year running, TRACTION provided the 'pit crew' for students from Redland District Special School as they participated in the 24-hour Fraser Coast Technology Challenge.

Participants engaged in Bike Build and Small Engines programs and the new Permaculture program saw its first harvest.

In the Community

With the support of Doboy ward Councillor Ryan Murphy and a grant from the Brisbane Lord Mayor Suburban Initiatives Fund, TRACTION delivered 2 community events in the September school holidays. The 'Schools Out' sessions were inclusive, family-friendly events intended to forge vibrant local communities. Riders of all ages and experience levels participated in the event, which featured pro-rider demonstrations, 'come and try' and free-ride opportunities, free maintenance and safety checks, sausage sizzle and drinks.

Special thanks to LUX BMX, Colony BMX and Syndicate Store for supporting the BMX Jam and Scooter Bash events.

Check out the event wrap ups and photos: click here for the BMX Jam and here for the Scooter Bash.

The team from Ellaspede, a Brisbane-based, custom motorcycle building business, have been great supporters of TRACTION since we started in 2015. TRACTION built 5x 'Postie' bikes for participants to ride at their 7th 'Dust Hustle' event. Each bike was named in honour of past graduates of the program - Sam, Luke, Ava, Bailey and Jack. It was awesome to have Sam himself helping out at the event. 5 mad punters paid $295 each for the experience of a lifetime, with $200 of the ticket proceeds flowing to TRACTION. See photos and read the event wrap.

About TRACTION

TRACTION empowers young people in need, helping them positively engage with their communities, discover their talents and create their own future.

We understand that everybody learns differently and some young people don't realise their potential in a classroom. TRACTION provides a safe environment where young people restore items donated by the community and with the guidance of mentors, learn new skills and put them into action through participation in real, tangible and meaningful learning activities.

You can find out more about the TRACTION program here.
