This month, Mayor Michael B. Hancock released his proposed 2019 City Budget. The proposed budget (PDF) document provides detailed information about the City and County of Denver's estimated revenues and expenditures for the ensuing fiscal year. It also serves as a work plan for the city and its departments, including a framework for setting priorities, strategic initiatives and performance measures.
The proposed budget includes:
$27 million more for transportation and mobility, with a focus on bike and pedestrian infrastructure
68 new police officers and firefighters
$3.1 million to expand the property tax rebate to cover more seniors, residents with disabilities, and families
More than $50 million for affordable housing
Purchase of 119 electric vehicles for city fleet to reduce emissions
A $14.7 million investment in homeless services and facilities
Funds to enhance maintenance and safety crews so our parks remain safe and welcoming to all
Funds to create the Neighborhood Equity and Stabilization Team (NEST) to deploy resources tailored to protect vulnerable neighborhoods under threat of displacement
Elimination of late fees for library books and materials
Funds for a dog park in South Denver
This budget is not finalized and I would love to hear your opinion. Take a minute to look over the proposed budget here and then send me an email letting me know what you think.

As of October 1, 2018, Denver City Council agreed to rename the park situated at Asbury and Tejon. The unnamed park at Asbury and Tejon is nestled into the area affectionately known as “Goat Hill” in Southwest Denver. Historically, the people who lived in this area were a mixture of Spanish, Mexican and Native American ancestry. They were proud Americans who spoke both English and Spanish. The Goat Hill area quickly took on the nickname of “La Lomita” meaning “little hill.”
In the 1960s there was even a restaurant named La Lomita. This restaurant was owned and operated by various Abeyta family members. This was a gathering place for the humble people of the area. La Lomita was one of the few places where they could comfortably gather and enjoy homemade tortillas, fresh beans, red New Mexico style chili, and other foods that were common to their modest homes. La Lomita Restaurant sat at the corner of Vallejo and Evans when this now busy street was nothing more than a two lane dirt road.
Memorializing the name of this area will ensure that these soft-spoken Americans of Spanish/Mexican/Indian descent are never forgotten, and that their contributions to the Southwest Denver community will always be a part of our great City.
Fall is here and so is Denver’s LeafDrop
Three weekday drop-off sites will be open this year through December 7
The leaves changing colors are a pretty sight, but when they fall, make sure they don’t end up in the trash! Give those leaves a second life through Denver’s LeafDrop program, which will turn those fallen leaves into compost. Starting Monday, October 1, three free weekday drop-off sites will be open to Denver residents through Friday, December 7. The leaves collected through this program will be turned into a high-quality compost, which will be made available for residents to purchase in May. Learn more here!
Landlord-Tenant Mediation
Community Mediation Concepts is working with the Mayor’s Office, City Council and Office of Economic Development to help keep families in their homes. Too often tenants have a financial “event”, a sick child, a broken car, or something similar and they miss all or part of their rent payment. They are not comfortable or sure how to talk with their landlord, so they get further and further behind, until the day an eviction notice is filed. Then it is too late and many bad things can happen.
They are here to facilitate the conversation between tenants and landlords. They’ll help them talk to each other, figure the situation out and come up with a solution. Learn more about the program here.

Sanderson Gulch Stormwater Improvements
Excavation of Sanderson Gulch between Sanderson Gulch Park (at Lipan Street and Arkansas Avenue) and S. Platte River Drive is largely complete. The existing undersized concrete culverts have been removed. Work crews have begun to build the large, high-flow concrete culverts that will channel water under Lipan Street, the railroad tracks, and S. Platte River Drive to the South Platte River. Granite boulders are being moved on site in preparation for the landscaping features that will be installed around the planned low-flow open channel and at the outfall to the river. The current traffic configuration will remain in effect until spring of 2019.
Safety Note:
As a reminder, this remains an active construction site, please observe road and sidewalk closures and detours.
