We are Here to Help

Are you the parent, guardian or caregiver of a child that has been recently diagnosed with cerebral palsy? Are you looking for resources to help your child live a Life Without Limits?

The first few years of parenting a child with cerebral palsy can be the most challenging, frightening and lonely. CPABC's goal is to help strengthen our community of families, and develop the best services and supports to ease the burden and stress associated with caring for a child living with cerebral palsy. As a provider of services, resources and support for parents and families impacted by cerebral palsy, we are Here to Help!

Two upcoming events put the spotlight on an athletic team with a special fund named in their honour. The Cerebral Palsy Association of BC’s Jason & Rand Fund is named for friends Rand Surbey and Jason Cole, and provides financial support for speciality equipment for children, youth and adults living with cerebral palsy.

On October 7th, the dynamic duo will be running another half marathon at the GoodLife Victoria Marathon, raising awareness and funds. The day before the race is World CP Day – a fitting tribute to Jason and Rand’s goal to affect real change and support the thirst for adventure even among people living below eye level.

Help others live a Life Without Limits through the Jason & Rand Fund.

“I love it!” – Peter is a CPABC Movement Ambassador

"Going downhill is a lot of fun, as long as you remember your brake!"

As an active senior living with cerebral palsy, Peter Brown was excited to join the Cerebral Palsy Association of BC’s Movement Without Limits program and incorporate biking into his fitness routine. British Columbians of any age living with cerebral palsy may apply for a free Alinker bike to get active.

“It gets you outside and gets you moving, and that makes you feel good. You're adding to the quality of your day and quality of life because it’s something positive all-around.” Peter has proved that it is possible for people living with cerebral palsy, at any age, to live a Life Without Limits.

Making an adapted fashion statement - Youth Without Limits

On September 14, with the help of facilitator Karen Chan and friends, the Cerebral Palsy Association of BC’s Youth Without Limits support group put the spotlight on adapted fashion.

Participants immersed themselves in solving some common problems that people with disabilities face when it comes to clothing. The group brainstormed ideas and came up with their own designs to make wearing a poncho a fashion statement instead of a drag.

Adapted fashion celebrates the strength and beauty of our diversity and actively responds to advancements in inclusion and accessibility. By participating in its creation, peers change the face of their community and dialogue.

“Straw ban” stigma and strategy
Dear members,

Thank you so much for responding to our posts about the proposed “straw ban” in the City of Vancouver.

The City of Vancouver’s Single-Use Item Reduction Strategy is not scheduled to come into effect until June 2019, but many restaurants and small businesses have already started phasing out straws all over the province.

In August, the Cerebral Palsy Association of BC met with the City of Vancouver and articulated our concerns. We are currently the only organization to have requested a face-to-face meeting with the City on this issue and brought forward the concerns of our members.

Please read our recommendations here, share our article and share your comments with us.

If you would like to share your concerns directly with the Reduce Single-Use Team, please send them an email
