A Message from Pastor Fran
This Sunday, October 6, is World Communion Sunday – a day when we observe and experience a universal Christian sacrament of breaking bread with our brothers and sisters around the world. Together, we remember both the night of Jesus’ betrayal – when Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper, and Jesus’ sacrifice. This particular celebration of the Eucharist is a time for remembering that around the world we stand in unity throughout Christendom. During the traditional worship services on Sunday, we will experience acts of worship that reflect different ways God’s children celebrate the sacred gift of the body and blood of Christ – the ultimate gift of God’s grace.
I invite you to come and worship. Come and experience the mystery. Come and receive the gift of Christ’s body and blood. Come, expecting to meet the risen Christ at his table.
If you want to experience a community of faith that believes in the unity of the body of Christ…come to Clemson UMC!

Blessings,
Pastor Fran

But there is a flavor of the Christian celebration of Pentecost as well, when people from around the Mediterranean world came together in mutual understanding and inspiration, by the power of the Holy Spirit. World Communion Sunday is a time for remembering that around the globe—in different languages, with different traditions and customs, and in various forms of liturgy—the Lord’s Supper is celebrated throughout Christendom. At its best, therefore, World Communion Sunday serves two purposes: it is both a joyous and meaningful partaking in Jesus’ sacred meal with his friends and a mind-opening exposure to different Christian traditions from around the world.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT LIVE!
Dinner of lasagna, salad, garlic bread and dessert at 5:30pm in the Christian Life Center followed by Karen Carter's presentation about Clemson Community Care at 6:00pm.

New Book for Monday Night Discussion Group
Three women from three different faith traditions come together in the wake of 9/11 to write a children’s book on religious tolerance. As they work, the women must grapple with questions and misconceptions not only about another’s faith, but also about their own. The Faith Club offers a candid look at how this trio learns to discuss their doubts and differences in a constructive manner. A good lesson for the current moment, too, perhaps?! Authored by Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver, and Priscilla Warner, The Faith Club is available in print and digital formats from multiple outlets. Join us on Monday nights at 7:30 in room 116 of the Office Building. We’ll start this selection on October 8, but you are welcome to drop in any time!

CUMC Outreach – Shoebox Ministry Kickoff!
While it may still feel like summer, it is time to start thinking about Christmas and our Shoebox Ministry. This is a great opportunity for all CUMC members and families to personally get involved with a fun project that helps children in need during the holidays.
The Spirit Lake Ministry delivers shoeboxes to children on seven reservations in the Dakotas and Minnesota. Their primary target for shoebox distribution is children in foster care on the reservations and children in households recommended by social services and clergy on the reservations. These shoeboxes are the only gift that most of these children receive during the holidays. This year at CUMC, we have a goal of sending at least 120 boxes from our congregation to the Spirit Lake Ministry Center. Boxes will be blessed on November 11 during Sunday services and will then be sent to North Dakota for distribution.
Want to help? Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Pack a box! We will distribute packing instructions on Sunday, October 14 and will also provide shoeboxes for those that need one.
  • Donate! Want to participate, but don’t want to shop? No problem! Please include a donation for $20 (marked for Christmas Shoebox) and we’ll be happy to purchase supplies so that a box can be packed in your honor at a packing party at CUMC.
  • Host a packing party! We encourage Sunday school classes, UMW Circles and other groups to host a packing party so that you can have fun packing boxes together.
  • Have questions? Please email Kate (kate.barger@cobb-vantress.com) or Lyn (lmcmshef@gmail.com).
