HOP Newsletter

HOP online soon to be a reality! We are pleased to share that the online platform for HOP will soon be going live! We anticipate hosting pilot groups with youth yet this fall. This online adaptation will expand HOP accessibility, particularly in communities that are resource scarce, geographically disperse, and/or where there are few trained facilitators. We will begin by offering the program for youth, but plan to provide it to additional groups once we have worked out all the kinks and logistics.Our next steps include:
  • Finalizing the platform
  • Being trained in its use
  • Recruiting a cadre of awesome HOP online facilitators
  • Recruiting a few pilot groups of youth to help test the platform and provide feedback
Many of you have already reached out to say you are interested in being trained as an online facilitator and/or willing to help recruit youth for a pilot program. Thank you for your support! We look forward to working with you as we learn how to effectively provide online programming to increase inclusion, support, and mental well-being for people living with mental health challenges.

HOP Facilitator Spotlight

We are pleased to be community partners of Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resilience Education), a grant funded program taking place at seven Milwaukee Public Schools with the aim of improving behavioral health awareness among school-age youth and their communities. This relationship has allowed us to forge a close-knit relationship with MPS schools, where in the last year we have conducted four HOP facilitator trainings with Project AWARE staff, student service staff, and school educators. Project AWARE staff have been a tremendous resource in terms of helping us to better understand HOP implementation challenges and logistics in school-based settings. MPS schools have held at least a dozen HOP student groups with high school aged youth. Project AWARE schools have also been involved in helping us to conduct randomized control trials to build the evidence base for the HOP program. From MPS facilitators, we have heard fabulous anecdotal data attesting to the impact of HOP:
  • students tend to maintain connection not only with one another, but also establish closer bonds with facilitators;
  • students want to continue meeting once the groups end; some have wanted to name the program HOPE and have lauded it for making them feel 'less alone';
  • some students have reached out to get therapy/treatment/counselling following program involvement;
  • the program seems to increase a sense of empathy among students;
  • one school hosted multiple HOP groups in 1 semester as students became program advocates and recruited their peers; students at this school also lead  additional stigma reduction and mental health awareness efforts.
We look forward to continuing to work with MPS and Project AWARE to grow their capacity to offer HOP to diverse cohorts of students and to learn from their experiences doing so!
