Woodfield Sign Volunteer

The SAC has made great strides in keeping parents up-to-date on all events and activities happening at Duke.  We regularly communicate through our website, Facebook page, the Need to Read weekly newsletter, AND the front sign on Woodfield.  The front sign is an important daily reminder for parents about school activities.  Want to get involved more but short on time?  SAC is looking for a volunteer to change the sign - just 20 minutes, once a month.  If this commitment sounds reasonable, please get in touch!

🕷🕸👻 Halloween Dance 🕷🕸👻

As October creeps to an end, Duke will be hosting the annual ALL AGES SAC Halloween Dance! This year it will be held on a Friday! Mark your calendars for Fri Oct 26th for this spooktacular night out with the kids, from 5:30-7:30pm in the Woodfield Gym [more info]. There will be a dance party in the gym, and a bake sale with lots of pizza, drinks and popcorn. We are always thrilled to receive nut-free baked goods, which can be dropped off anytime on Friday in the main office.  There will also be the ever popular Haunted Hallway - which comes in a friendly or spooky experience.

SAC needs volunteers to help make this amazing event happen, from food table servers to haunted house wranglers, the more the spookier! To sign up, please email: duke.volunteering@gmail.com

The Boo Crew club will return for the students who want to volunteer as spooks inside the Haunted Hallway during the dance. They do not need to volunteer the whole dance, in fact we make sure all the kids have breaks. This club will meet a few lunch times in advance to plan costumes and make some props (details to follow).  There will be announcements made in the mornings to let the kids know when/where. Please contact head haunt wrangler Veronica for more details at: veronica.bulger@gmail.com

Kerr Road Safety

School drop-offs in the morning are a busy time.  Kerr Road/Highfield Road are often used to drop kids off at the stairs leading up to Duke. At the best of times, this is a narrow 2-way street, but with cars parked on both sides the road is left with only one usable lane in some sections. Combining lots of children trying to cross in the middle of the road, limited space, and virtually no parking is a recipe for disaster. We all have places to be, but let's remember the safety of each child at Duke should be our #1 priority. While we do our part as attentive drivers, let’s also remind our children to be safe when crossing the road.

Resident Options

Residents on Kerr Road who want to take additional steps to curb traffic issues have several options:
  • Please Slow Down Lawn Sign Campaign -  You can help remind the public to slow down and to be aware by displaying “Please Slow Down” lawn signs in your neighbourhood.  You can pick up signs at your local Councillor’s office.

  • Police Enforcement
  • Petition for Additional Measures
  • Divisional Traffic Response Units

SAC Parent Rep Contacts

Did you know that on SAC there are four Parent Reps? We'd love to offer you support when you need it -- whether you simply need information, or if you are having communication difficulties, or classroom woes. SAC Parent Reps have created a new group on Facebook for Duke Parents where they can provide a support forum for Duke families: 'Sup DoC - Support for/by Duke Parents'. Additionally, there is a new email contact for the Parent Reps that any families can use who aren't on Facebook: parentrep@dukesac.ca.

Quick Items:

  • Just a reminder that the official channel for contacting the Duke SAC on Facebook is Duke of Connaught SAC - Official or Sup DoC - Support for/by Duke Parents.  We are also available via email.
  • Lost & Found will be cleared out on Fri Oct 12.
  • Support your school library by shopping at Ella Minnow the weekend of Oct 12-14 [more info].
  • Ward 16 School Trustee All Candidates Meeting, Mon Oct 15th, 7:30pm [more info].
  • Kiss'N'Ride - We are still looking for volunteers to restart this initiative.  The Lazy Daisy has graciously offered coffee vouchers for any volunteers.
  • Pool Temperature - if you have concerns regarding the pool temperature, send our Trustee, Sheila Cary-Meagher, an email.  She wants to hear from as many of you as possible to make her case stronger with the TDSB, who is in charge of managing the pool.
