Upcoming Events

October 8: Library Closed for Indigenous People's Day

October 9: Let's Talk About It Book Club

Funded by a grant from the Maine Humanities Council and facilitated by author and mentor Lee Heffner, the Let's Talk About It book group will meet on Tuesday, October 9 at 11 am. We continue the series, "Becoming American: Struggles, Successes, and Symbols," with An Orphan in History by Paul Cowan.

From the publisher:

"Sometimes we must look into the past in order to face the future.

After growing up as a fully assimilated Jew, Paul Cowan embarked in his mid-thirties upon a journey to discover and appreciate his true identity and heritage. This 'orphan in history' relates his search for these roots, detailing the path he took from his Park Avenue home to nineteenth-century Lithuania to a contemporary Israeli kibbutz, leading to remarkable personal discoveries that will move everyone who has yearned to know more about their past.

An Orphan in History is a classically beautiful, inspiring story of how one man evolved from describing himself as 'an American Jew' to 'an American and a Jew.'

This story will inspire you to journey in search of your true self."

These discussions are always thought-provoking and lively, and we welcome anyone to join for one book or the whole series!  Refreshments are served. The next book in the series to be discussed will be The Way to Rainy Mountain by N. Scott Momaday, and copies are available at the library.

We are also excited to announce there has been a change to the final book in the series, and we will now be reading the new and critically acclaimed Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen by Jose Antonio Vargas! Copies will be available to borrow soon at the library. For questions or additional information call us at 354-2453 or check on our social media sites.

October 15: Family Movie & Pizza Night

Join us at Thomaston Public Library for Family Movie & Pizza Night on Monday, October 15 at 5 pm! Free and open to all, and pajamas are always welcome. Just in time for Halloween, we are showing Sony Pictures' Hotel Transylvania!

Welcome to Hotel Transylvania, Dracula’s lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up and no humans are allowed. One special weekend, Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) has invited all his best friends – Frankenstein and his wife, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, the Werewolf family, and more – to celebrate his beloved daughter Mavis’s (Selena Gomez) 118th birthday. For Dracula, catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem but the party really starts when one ordinary guy stumbles into the hotel and changes everything!

The film will be shown with closed captions for the deaf and hard of hearing.

If you can't make it this month, make sure to mark your calendars for November 19 - we'll be showing Wreck-It Ralph just before the sequel hits the theaters!

October 16: Intergenerational Book Club

On Tuesday October 16th at 2:30 pm the Thomaston Intergenerational Book Club will meet to discuss Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

This novel was written in 1908 and has been considered a classic children's novel. Anne Shirley, a young orphan from the fictional community of Bolingbroke, Nova Scotia, is sent to live with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, siblings in their fifties and sixties, after a childhood spent in strangers' homes and orphanages. Marilla and Matthew had originally decided to adopt a boy from the orphanage to help Matthew run their farm, which is set in the fictional town of Avonlea. Through a misunderstanding, the orphanage sends Anne instead. She is highly imaginative, eager to please and, at times, quite a dramatic individual. However, she is defensive about her appearance, despising her red hair and pale, thin frame. She is often quite talkative, especially when it comes to describing her fantasies and dreams. At first, stern and sharp Marilla says Anne must return to the orphanage, but after much observation and considering, along with Matthew's strong liking to Anne, she decides to let her stay.  As a child of imagination, Anne takes much joy in life and adapts quickly, thriving in the close-knit farming village. Her imagination and talkativeness soon brighten up Green Gables.

On the third Tuesday of every month, the Intergenerational Book Club, a group of men and women of all ages, comes together at the library to share their opinions and ideas about the selected book. All are welcome at the Thomaston Library on October 16th at 2:30  p.m.   If you live in Thomaston and would like to attend but need a ride, please call the library at 354-2453 a week before the discussion date.

November's selection will be Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult, and copies will be available to borrow at the library.

On Display at the Library

Celebrating Survivors

October is both Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Celebrate survivors with us by checking out some of the amazing and inspiring stories, both fiction and non-fiction, on display in our main reading room.

Your Vote is Your Voice!

It's almost election time, and we can't forget our most important duty as Americans. For the second half of the month, we will have voter registration information, voter guides, and more resources available in the library.

Last Chance Books

We have quite a few picture books that haven't been checked out in at least two years on display in the Children's Room of the library - come see what's been lonely and left on the shelves for too long. If you see a favorite and think we should keep it, let us know by checking it out! Otherwise, many of these books may be available to purchase in our Fall Feast Book Sale on October 13!

Showcase Space Available

Speaking of displays, you may have noticed that we have a lovely glass display case in our main reading room, and we would love to feature some of our local patrons' talents and interests. If you would be interested in showcasing your work, please contact us for more information!

Bookmobile Home Delivery Service

Some folks may be aware that we offer a Bookmobile Home Delivery Service, but many are not... We have obtained a grant to fund this service for people in Thomaston and some of the surrounding communities who are unable to come to the library due to disability (short- or long-term) or age. We have a new brochure to advertise the Bookmobile available at the library, or we would be happy to email it to anyone who would like a copy. Help us spread the word if you or someone you know is unable to visit us at the library and could benefit from a visit from our Bookmobile!
