Pumpkin All the Way

It’s that time of year… October has become the month of pumpkin everything. Pumpkin spice lattes and pies abound. And I’ve also seen many new items such as pumpkin-flavored cereals, pretzels, energy bars, donuts and more.

Most of you already know that the majority of these products are processed foods full of sugar, preservatives and other ingredients that can wreak havoc on your waistline and your overall health.

The real thing is a much different story. Pumpkin in its purest form is a nutrient-rich squash that deserves a spot on your plate this time of year.

It’s full of beta-carotene, an important antioxidant linked to lower rates of certain cancers including breast cancer and lung cancer. Carotene-rich foods are also good for your heart. Pumpkin is also high in fiber, which is important for healthy digestion, hunger and weight control.

You can buy pumpkins to roast at home (is there anything better than fresh pumpkin seeds?) or enjoy the benefits of pumpkin when you buy a time-saving puree. Just try to make sure it’s organic and plain—no extras needed.

Here are 8 amazing real-food recipes to help you enjoy pumpkin season.
