It's official at St. John's: Duke Deputy AD/COO Cragg heads to Queens to take the reigns of the Red Storm. Jonnies Prez Gempesaw: "His vision for St. John's Athletics coupled with his tremendous experience and commitment to excellence will undoubtedly benefit our student-athletes, as we collectively work to ensure their success on and off the field of play." Duke MBB HC Krzyzewski: "Quite simply, Duke Basketball would not be where it is without Mike. He has maintained a consistent, and critically important, voice within our program. In addition to his exemplary professionalism and unparalleled vision in the workplace, he has essentially been an extended member of our immediate family over the years." Blue Devils AD White also effusive in his praise for Cragg's work in Durham. Cragg says he immediately felt at home on the St. John's campus & notes a contagious passion around the university & its brand. (link)
Notable Maryland booster Jaklitsch says the probe into the culture around Terps FB will be completed this Sunday. UMD's Board of Regents aren't scheduled to meet again until the middle of next month, but Jaklitsch hopes action can be taken quicker. Jaklitsch's view: "None of the people in the Champion’s Club would have ever permitted a toxic atmosphere to exists. Everyone in the Champion’s Club sees how much DJ Durkin cares about his players. He cares as much about his players as he does about his own kids and wife and he’s exhibited that time and time again. […] No one can tell me that’s the actions of a coach that has a toxic culture. That is so false. It is a ridiculous narrative pushed by [ESPN’s] Heather Dinich to sell stories and it’s dead wrong. 100 percent wrong." (link)
The San Jose Mercury News' Wilner scores interviews with Colorado Chancellor DiStefano & Arizona Prez Robbins on some key issues for the Pac-12. DiStefano points to the league's TV deals & the evolving media landscape, "There are challenges in the next three-to-five years. Which way are the winds blowing? Should we get in before the Big Ten, or is it better to wait and see what the Big Ten does? I don’t have the answers, but I think we need to ask those questions." Robbins on the same topic, "I hope this conversation in three-five-10 years from now is, ‘Wow, those guys saw it. They saw it coming, and we got locked in. We made more money on the front end than they did, but boy did they hit a home run because they held tight under enormous criticism. The story is not fully told yet." Both leaders support Pac-12 Commish Scott "and the collective wisdom of those who have been around." Both also praise the broad-based success of the league, while also noting the importance of improved FB results on a national stage. (link); Additionally from Robbins: "The decision to own our own content was strategic and was playing the long term, and maybe it’s because we get caught up in the tech bubble and all this, but I could see the day when we come out looking really good on this thing because we own our own content and going straight to my sons on the computer and they’re streaming everything … Who knows, Google and Amazon and Apple and all these people are getting into the entertainment market. Amazon started with books and now they’re into food and health. I’m shocked how all these companies are into health … All these guys are going to get into this (sports media) stuff. If we have our own content and can do deals – it’s the vision beyond the vision. Can we go directly to consumers and make deals that are even more lucrative than the deals currently made in today’s world? It’s the Gretzky thing: I see the puck where it’s going to go, so I’m going to skate over here. But we’ve had years, of course, of having this gap, and that’s undeniable. But I’m very supportive of commissioner Scott and the collective wisdom of those who have been around. I’m learning as fast as I can, and I’m very interested and passionate and want to make the best deals we can make." Lots more. (link)
New SWAC Commish McClelland Q&As with The Undefeated, says he'll leverage a combination of hard work, integrity, PR pushing & revenue generating to move the league forward, "We want to go out and get scholarships, we want to go out and do the things it’s going to take to build and sustain our conference from a financial standpoint so we can continue to produce quality athletes that do well on and off the field." Short-term goals: More sponsors & cash. Long-term: Strategies to raise the conference's overall profile & improve hoops ratings. Believes the SWAC is in a "strength of position" & could add members "once realignment occurs again." (link)
$150M. Boston College is rolling-out a new five-year strategy backed by a fund-raising campaign dubbed, 'Greater Heights.' Eagles AD Jarmond: "Our time is now. We can’t succeed by resting on our laurels. We need to consistently look for ways to make BC attractive to student-athletes, coaches, and fans so we can achieve competitive excellence. That includes building and renovating facilities and providing the support services needed to make the student-athlete experience as successful as possible both in and out of the classroom." Further, Jarmond believes FB & hoops should regularly be ranked in the Top 25 & there are plans to add support to "the elite status of our hockey program." More. (link)
Development, cont.: Give Illinois AD Whitman a couple of days, he'll bring back a couple mil. This time it's $3.1M from UI alum & businessman Heckman that will go toward the new FB Performance Center with Heckman's name adorning the lobby. The Illini have now exceeded the $30M fundraising goal for the new digs with $31.175M on the books. Heckman made his name (and money, presumably), as a former leader at ConAgra Foods & ConAgra Trade Group. (link); Colorado also bags a smooth $3.1M from the Crawford family that will transforms the Buffs' approach to performance nutrition with hands-on teaching kitchens, fueling stations, plus expanded snack options. (link); Liberty launches a $250K campaign to rename its main strength & conditioning space the 'Men of Armor Football Alumni Weightroom.' Alum Osborne says he'll match funds dollar for dollar. (link)
USA Today's Myerberg is the latest to go in on black representation at the FB HC level as only 11% sit in the top chair vs. 56% of FBS student-athletes. Florida State's Taggart: "It’s always been that way. It’s changing, probably not as fast as we want it to, but it is." Stanford's Shaw: "It’s access to the decision makers. For those athletics directors, presidents and provosts that are involved in the process, the committees and search firms, it’s providing access to those viable candidates." Attorney Mehri, who was a major influence in the creation of the NFL's Rooney Rule, "Unless someone owns this issue and develops what we call a ‘ready list’ of coaches, the numbers are going to be flat." (link)
U.S. District Court Eastern District of Michigan Judge Carem Steeh rules "there is enough evidence that Eastern Michigan doesn't provide equal opportunities for female athletes." The move momentarily halts the elimination of two female sport programs for the Eagles as Steeh pushes the matter back to EMU representatives & attorneys for the two female student-athletes who are pressing the issue. Notable from Steeh: "The actual numbers reveal a participation disparity that has lingered for at least 15 years, with no evidence of a serious effort to address it." (link)

College Football Playoff boss Hancock again asked about the possibility of UCF crashing the party, "Yes, there is a path. UCF got full consideration from the committee last year. I believe the committee at the end of the season had ranked UCF higher than the sportswriters and the coaches had. So they got every consideration and they had a wonderful season. […] For the path, play a good schedule, win your games and you're going to be in the hunt for the College Football Playoff." (link); "Several hundred thousand" looks to be what Coastal Carolina will end up spending to take care of its teams & student-athletes who were displaced by Hurricane Florence. Chants AD Hogue says the total doesn't worry him as the university's pie is "well into the hundreds of millions." The NCAA's Special Assistance Fund is another potential pot CCU could tap into. Looks like Women's Soccer will have spent the most consecutive days on the road at 18. The university is set to get back to a normal schedule next week. (link)

"People are able to recognize the window of opportunity for the value that athletics can bring to a university. [...] I want to provide a first–class experience for each and every student-athlete. It is critical in my role to recognize when to evolve and adapt, and particularly at this school, I can already see tremendous potential." That's still relatively new Bucknell AD Truax on part of his approach to leading the Bison. The university's student newspaper profiled Truax's work so far in Lewisburg & noted his "calm, cool and confident demeanor." (link)
Georgia Tech boss Stansbury pens to Yellow Jackets supports on FB HC Johnson after a 1-3 start, "Like many of you, I’m frustrated and disappointed in how this year’s football season has started. I was in that locker room after Saturday’s game and can tell you this with 100-percent certainty – NO ONE is more frustrated with our 1-3 start than the men who coach our team and the young men on the team. […] However, with all due respect, I truly feel that many of the emails and social media posts that I’ve seen as of late are counterproductive to meeting the high expectations that we all have for our program. […] Coach Johnson is a fighter and he has proven time and again that he can mold a group of young men that can fight above their weight class. I am confident that he and his team have a lot of fight left in them, to go along with a lot of ability and a lot of football still left to play." Stansbury also digs in on how fans can contribute to the improvement of the program so it doesn't always have to "fight above its weight class." (link)
Ohio State with an interesting 'Silence' graphic & tweet yesterday that was meant to promote FB's high-profile kick with Penn State on Saturday night that missed the mark for many in the media. The tweet & a follow-up explanation of its intent was eventually deleted. (link); USA Today's Armour: "Yes, this might be 'just' an ad. But given what Ohio State has been confronted with in recent months, silence is nothing to be prized, and it's certainly nothing to promote." More. (link)
House Republicans met yesterday as part of a Judiciary subcommittee on the topic of legalized sports gambling, the first time Congress has discussed the topic formally since the Supreme Court handed down its edict and there was a push for more federal involvement. NFL spokeswoman & lobbyist Moore testified to the group & used the word "integrity" 24 times. American Gaming Association SVP for Public Affairs Slane says stateside books won't be able to compete if weighed down by "onerous" integrity fees, "All these notions about data fees and integrity fees by the leagues, that doesn’t help." (link)
Idaho Diving HC Southerland has been reinstated by both the Vandals & USA Diving after claims of sexual misconduct several years ago. Southerland: "I am very happy to return to coaching at the University of Idaho. They have been supportive, allowed due process to unfold while following their own procedures, and have allowed me to return after being cleared.  I do not believe all institutions would have done so." (link); The criminal court case against former Michigan State Women's Gymnastics HC Klages on the grounds that she lied about her knowledge of the Nassar situation will move forward as the presiding judge says testimony by two former Spartan Youth Gymnastics athletes was credible. (link)
More Personnel: Montana AD Haslam appointed to the NCAA Division I FCS Selection Committee for a term through the 2020 season. Current committee comprised of Central Arkansas AD Teague (chair), Rhode Island boss Bjorn, Western Carolina's Eaton, Missouri State's Moats, Marist's Murray, Campbell's Roller, Jacksonville State's Seitz, Bryant's Smith and Bucknell's Truax. (link); Illinois extends Wrestling HC Heffernan with a five-year deal. Salary will go from $185,940 this year to $215,940 by the 2022-23 season. (link); Saint Mary's gives Baseball HC Valenzuela a five-year extension. (link); Another extension, this a one-year bump for East Carolina Baseball HC Godwin that will take him through the 2023 season. (link); Southern Utah parts ways with Women's Tennis HC Ketmayura. Men's Tennis HC Pucher named interim Director of Tennis and will oversee both programs for now. (link); Arizona State Prez Crow picks up a $150K bonus, dubbed "at-risk compensation." He also received a $20K increase in contributions to his retirement plan, bringing the annual contribution amount to $140K. Elsewhere in the state: Arizona Prez Robbins and Northern Arizona boss Cheng each get $35K bonuses, plus an additional $15K for their work on the Enterprise Executive Committee. (link); ESPN Senior Writer Kimes gets a multiyear extension from the WWL and will debut an NFL-themed podcast called Bootleg with Mina Kimes.  (link)

The NCAA Board of Governors has engaged consultant Attain LLC "to help create an actionable, long-range plan that solidifies the direction and priorities for the Association." Feedback from multiple constituency groups will be compiled throughout the Fall via focus groups, interviews & surveys. "After the collection of feedback, the working group will begin drafting the plan. The Board of Governors is targeting summer 2019 for the final strategic plan." (link)
Utah AD Harlan has spent a good amount of time during his first 90 days leading the Utes on a potential revamp of Rice-Eccles Stadium & says the one thing he's been most impressed with is the fandom of Utes supporters as evidenced by a packed stadium for an early season 6p kick against an FCS opponent. Harlan wants to couple all the butts in seats with a premier in-game experience, "We want to be an elite school when it comes to the experience for our fans." Harlan has also caught up with Pac-12 Commish Scott & says Scott voiced how much value Utah brings to the league. (link)
New Mexico's FB field will no longer bear the name of Margaret & Turner Branch once this season is done as an amended naming rights agreement includes a decrease in financial commitment from the Branch's. The original donation in 2012 was $1.5M to be paid over seven years & extend the naming rights for 15 years. However, the renegotiated total lands at $830K. Margaret Branch points to the passing of Turner & Dreamstyle's commitment to naming the stadium that devalues the field exposure. (link)
Rutgers will host its first-ever RU Brewfest at the Block R Party across from HighPoint.com Stadium on Saturday morning before kicking with Indiana. $50 gets you access to the Brewfest and a game ticket. Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs and Strategic Communications Thorpe: "Something like this checks boxes for millenials and event-goers across the state and tri-state area. We think it's going to be unique. The people of New Jersey are very prideful, so we look forward to having some of these Jersey-related breweries as part of the event." 750 tickets sold so far, but Thorpe admits the noon kicktime doesn't help. (link)
A recent study published in the Howard Journal of Communications asserts that bias by officials persists against HBCU WBB programs. Looking at DI from 2008-17, DI HBCU WBB programs were called for 1.5 more fouls per game than their PWI counterparts and represented the five most penalized seasons (and 8 of the top 15) over the course of the decade, despite comprising less than 7% of the school analyzed. The IHE recap of the study raises unanswered questions about black S-As on PWIs, as well as the race of the officials calling the fouls. The author has previously studied similar bias against HBCU FB programs. (link)
Also Noticed: Stetson's new baseball locker room is ready for occupancy. (link); Have I previously missed Tulane's 'Angry Wave' FB helmets? Whoa buddy. (link); Recently, a viral video surfaced of a special-needs little girl being reprimanded by another fan at a Houston Astros game for yelling too loudly. Texas Tech has extended an invitation to her to come to a Red Raiders game soon and "be as loud as she wants." More news out of Lubbock as TTU has sold more than 54K tix for tomorrow's kick with West Virginia and expects that number to reach 56K. (link); The American Athletic Conference SAAC will raise awareness on mental health with a new campaign called Pow6rful Minds. (link); America East and adidas partner up for a three-year deal. Van Wagner facilitated the partnership. (link); Kansas State announces a 50/50 Raffle at football games. Tickets are $5 for three, 10 for $10 or 60 for $20 and the winner will be announced by the end of the third quarter. (link); Arkansas-Pine Bluff will play at TCU in 2019 and at Miami (Ohio) in 2020. (link); Something to watch develop: The NBA and Turner Broadcasting announce that fans can purchase the remainder of any out-of-market game on League Pass once the buzzer sounds to end the third quarter. $1.99 no matter when you tune in after that. (link); HBO has no boxing broadcasts scheduled beyond the Oct. 27 fight at MSG and intends to duck out of the boxing business after 45 years. Changing times. (link)
