Just Around the Corner - October
Pastor’s Pen
The question - ‘Where do we go from here?’ - has been dropped around Memphis perhaps hundreds of times over the course of the last year. It was the theme of the MLK50 remembrances, addressed at dozens of events at the National Civil Rights Museum, and highlighted at just about every occasion focusing on race, faith, and equality.
In the city where Dr. King died - ‘Where do we go from here’?
In the city that ranks 2nd nationally in overall poverty - ‘Where do we go from here?’
In a city that struggles with segregation in housing and schools - ‘Where do we go from here?’
In a city where immigrant communities live in fear - ‘Where do we go from here?’
In a state that sits near dead last in voter turnout - ‘Where do we go from here?’
As we continue to search for concrete answers and real pathways to change, MICAH will hold its first public meeting to show our dedication to Moving Memphis Forward. On Sunday, October 21, from 4:30p-6:00p, at the historic Mason Temple, we take another huge step towards greater justice and equity in our city.
At this event, we will present our platform and issues surrounding our three selected areas (Economic Equity, Education Reform, and Immigration & Intercultural Equity) to the public officials, policy makers, and business leaders that are connected to our concerns. We will ask each of them to join us in our power movement, and we will pledge to keep them accountable in this struggle.
At the last major milestone for MICAH - the Issues Convention - all in attendance had a specific role to play. We were all, or nearly all, delegates with a vote to cast in deciding MICAH’s direction for the foreseeable future. The public meeting is different; different in that there are no votes to cast or deliberations to be made. Each person’s role is to be a movement maker and a justice seeker.
When leaders from Memphis - including Rep. Steve Cohen, Mayor Lee Harris, and Sheriff Floyd Bonner - look out into the vast sanctuary of Mason Temple, filled with passionate and energized citizens, a clear message will be sent. ‘We are organized and we are ready for greater economic equity, ready for all of our children to have equal access to quality education, ready to see all racial divides crumble, and ready to see justice lived out in our city.’
John Rutkauskas and I have made a big claim in the number of people from Shady Grove we believe can be at this meeting! We pledged that 50 of us - church members, friends, family, you name it - will be there! We need you to help fulfill this pledge. This is a chance to stand in the holy ground that is Mason Temple, and to let your presence be known in this new power movement! As the November elections approach, this is a chance to join with other justice-loving voters and, together, Move Memphis Forward.

Pride Festival
Join the Mid-South LGBTQ+ community tomorrow for the Mid-South Pride's 15th Annual Pride Fest, from 10am-5pm at Tom Lee Park. Enjoy a full day of entertainment, music, food, education, and celebration. SGPC will have a booth this year. We hope to see you there!
Tai Chi for Health

PW Day & Night Circles
The Day Circle will meet Tuesday, October 2, at 10am,in the library. Rev. Will is leading the discussion on Chapter 2. The Night Circle will meet at 7pm, at the home of Elaine Williams located at 1067 Welchire Place.

Wednesday Night Dinners

Sausage Biscuits
The Formation Team will be offering sausage biscuits (and plain biscuits) for sale to raise funds for the annual St. Luke's Christmas Dinner. They will be offered Sunday, October 14th and will cost $3.00. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Free legal advice will be offered Saturday, October 20, from 10am til noon at Idlewild Presbyterian Church located at 1750 Union Ave.
Fall Work Day

SuperLo & Kroger Cards
Please see Shelley Gray after worship each Sunday to sign up for the Rewards programs. Our last quarter Kroger rewards totaled $296.74! This is a $240.00 increase from the previous quarter!!!
Mustard Seed
If you would like to volunteer to work in the store, please see Bonnie Dodson to sign up. Come check out our new shipments! Lots of new merchandise just arrived.
Food Pantry
At this time, cans of main dish meals with meat (not tuna) are needed.
Blood Drive
Shady Grove is sponsoring a blood drive with Lifeblood, the Mid-South Regional Blood Center, recently renamed "Vitalant". We are asking for volunteer donors for our contribution to the Memphis needed blood supply on Sunday, November, 11th. We need to have at least 25 people sign up to qualify for the mobile unit to come to our church. Donating blood is safe and easy. If you're in good health, are 16+ yrs old and weigh at least 110 lbs, you can be a donor. You will fill out a health form to confirm you are eligible with questions such as: recent travel, recent treatment for cancer or exposure to blood borne viruses, such as HIV or hepatitis. If you are unsure you are eligible due to a medical condition or medications please go ahead and sign up if you are a willing donor and a staff member from Life Blood will determine if you are deemed eligible.

RACE FOR GRACE 5K 2018

Race for Grace is just around the corner! We would like to
encourage everyone to support shady grove's values of fitness,
community and charity by either volunteering or running in the race. also, please encourage your friends, neighbors and co-workers to participate in this fun, family friendly event.
Adult non-runners can walk the course and children 12 and under can either run the 5k or the 1 mile fun run.
The race benefits Shady Grove Elementary School.
