During the September Board of Trustees meeting, Cayuga Height’s Sergeant Jerry Wright was officially appointed and sworn in as the New Chief of Police for the Cayuga Heights Police Department.
Wright has served in the police profession for the last 23 years. He graduated from the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy; he began his career in Trumansburg as a part-time police officer and was a member of the Cornell University Police Department. Wright joined the Village in 2001 and was promoted to Sergeant in 2012.
Wright is the seventh Chief of Police following Chief James Steinmetz who retired at the end of August.
“I appreciate this opportunity greatly and I plan to lead from the front and as a team.”
Wright stated that some of his goals as Chief are to look for ways to make the department's time and resources more efficient and to improve on the quality of life in the workplace. “Having folks excited and happy to come to work on a day to day basis helps the moral which encourages productivity, efficiency, time management, and the proper use of benefit time.”
He also wants to continue the Department’s style of Community Policing which is very service oriented. “I love working for this Village. The support we receive from this community and its residents is what makes this place unique and special.”
And the community appears excited about having him, if the highly enthusiastic crowd who attended his swearing in ceremony is any indication. It was standing room only and Jerry was given a standing ovation after he was officially sworn in.

Recycling is changing. China is taking far fewer recyclables, and it's having an effect all across the U.S. - including Ithaca. The Tompkins County Recycling and Solid Waste Center (RSWC) has sent out an open letter to the community outlining these changes. To make things a little clearer, here's a breakdown of what is now accepted.
What's Accepted:
- Cardboard & mixed paper
- Glass containers (clear, green, brown)
- Metal cans & foil
- #1, #2, and #5 plastic containers
- Paper milk & juice cartons
What's NOT Accepted:
- Plastic bags or film
- #3, #4, #6, #7 or unmarked plastics
- Styrofoam
- Drinking glasses, Pyrex, or coffee pots
- Paper cups, tissues, napkins
- Syringes
- Containers from hazardous waste
- Compostable disposables
- Hangers
- PVC pipe
- Rigid plastics
Please note that additional materials, such as appliances with Freon®, batteries, electronics, fluorescent bulbs, household hazardous waste, rigid plastics, plastic bags, scrap metal, textiles, and tires can be recycled at the RSWC, but are not accepted for curbside collection. Permits are required for some materials. Fees may apply. Click here for more information.
The RSWC is also urging residents to clean your recyclables before putting them in your curbside bin or at the public drop-off. This includes all jars, plastics, tin foil, etc. which must be rinsed out to remove any food residue. This also goes for paper and cardboard too.
