Grants available for young adult and campus ministries

Episcopal ministries (or ecumenical ministries with an Episcopal presence) with dreams of launching a ministry or program for young adults are invited to apply for an Episcopal Church Young Adult and Campus Ministry grant. Eligible applicants include dioceses, congregations, or college/university ministries that are currently engaging in or seeking new relationships with young adults on and off college campuses. Grant information and applications are available online. The application deadline is November 19, 2018.

In 2018, grants were awarded to a wide range of projects. The Episcopal Diocese of Navajoland Area Mission received a grant to underwrite the purchase of tech equipment for their innovative program for training members of the young adult community in web development and technology. In the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester, campus partnerships are creating accessible ministries that include worship, spiritual development, formation, bible study, and fellowship as they address the needs of people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Other Young Adult Ministry Grants and Campus Ministry Grants funded initiatives that provide leadership development, training, and programming for young adults in the areas of racial reconciliation, discernment, environmental justice, peer ministry and social justice. A total of $133,000 is available for this cycle, with a total of $400,000 available this triennium. These grants are for the 2019-2020 academic year. Full details in English and Spanish can be found here.

St. Stephen’s men support #MeToo, attend women’s legacy luncheon

St. Stephen’s in San Luis Obispo hosted a table of 10 men at the Women’s Legacy Fund Luncheon in late September. The Women’s Legacy Fund’s mission is “to be a catalyst for philanthropy that improves the lives of women and girls in San Luis Obispo County.”

Because women’s empowerment depends upon men making a conscious effort to step out of the way – and because the #MeToo movement is more of a men’s issue than a women’s issue, the Rev. Ian Delinger (pictured above, far right) and four other men from St. Stephen’s each brought a male guest to the luncheon -- representing 10% of the men in attendance of the 700 gathered.

The keynote speaker was Ted Bunch (center), an educator, activist and lecturer working to end all forms of violence and discrimination against women and girls. He stressed that Americans need to shift away from teaching girls to protect themselves from boys, and rather emphasize teaching boys how to respect girls and women. The complete recap can be read here.

Learning about discernment in community at St. Barnabas'

On Thursday, October 11, St. Barnabas’ Arroyo Grande will begin a three week series based on the book Listening Hearts – Discerning Call in Community. God loves each one of us, beckoning us into a relationship that is personal and intimate. He calls out to us, inviting us to share in the divine life. How can we hear that call?  What could hearing it mean as we live day to day?  How can we help each other hear God’s voice and follow where God leads?
Join us on Thursdays, October 11, 18 and 25 at 6:15pm for a light supper followed by a study of call, discernment and community as they relate to each other. This study invites us to be aware of, and responsive to, our listening hearts. It reminds us that, in responding to God’s call, we discover ourselves. Join us for one or more of these classes and bring a friend. Childcare is provided.
