The Professionals

Songs about the jobs people do.

It's the end of the month, you know what that means... it's almost the first Wednesday of the next month. I hope you'll join me, Gavin, Jess and the whole crew at the Clocktower where we're going to strum out some songs on our ol' four-string. Our theme for this week's set: Jobs. More on that in a second.

We'll also have a special guest this week to help give us some strategies for doing vocal harmonies in a jam situation. Christine Graves is a talented contemporary-roots songwriter and music teacher. She's teaching voice and ukulele here in Ottawa, as well as looking to start up a new uke jam on the 4th Wednesdays of the month. She's accepted my invitation to come and help us out at Ukebox Pub Night to develop vocal harmonies for our jams. She's got some tips and tricks to share with us, and will help us through using some of these new skills in at least one song of our set.

So what songs will we be playing this week? Songs about jobs, professions, vocations, boss problems, things of that nature. As with many of these themes, I've got Dan to thank for his thorough list of suggestions. Here are a few professions we'll be exploring:
  • Transportation Professional: Drunken Sailor
  • Investor/Speculator: The Gambler by Kenny Rogers
  • Intelligence Officer: Secret Agent Man by Johnny Rivers
  • Redistribution Officer: Bank Robber by The Clash
  • and many more.... full list here.
As always, there will be great fun, camaraderie, food, craft beer and tunes to be had at our jam this Wednesday night.

No Second Wednesday Brewery Jam in October!

Unfortunately I was not on the ball fast enough this month to get us booked into a venue for a 2nd week jam. We'll just have to really make the 1st Wednesday Ukebox Jam count. Stay tuned for November. I'm looking to go east.

Join our Facebook Group: Ukebox Jams to share and help create upcoming jams. Follow us @UkeboxOttawa on Instagram and Twitter, and be part of the larger conversation with #UkeboxPubNights.

Still time to join the Song Circle!

Next Start Dates:

Intermediate Workshops!

Tuesday evening intermediate workshops. Themes tailored to regular jam participants who just want a dose of fresh ideas:

Mack The Knife | Ukulele Solo

Here's an easy little solo that Gavin and I have messed around with before in our Fakebook Jams. I've just gone through the tune and combined the melody with the chords in a very simple arrangement. This is a first step in developing this solo and I hope to keep noodling around on this tune in order to get a more fleshed out version. I've just posted it to my public page on Soundslice for others to see my process for developing an instrumental solo. Take a crack at it yourself! Once you learn it, you'd even be welcome to play your version of it at the jam!

Click on the link above to go to the Soundslice page where I've got tabs and a play-along video to help you learn this solo. You'll get prompted to create a free account with Soundslice, which is optional, but I highly encourage you to get one in order to comment, and hear about any new public repertoire I post. I already use this service with many of my students, and I'll likely be sharing more and more content there through this newsletter. Enjoy!
