Racial Awareness and Mindfulness Festival

A Mini-Festival of the Arts, Awareness, Healing, and Justice

October 20, 10am-5pm, at Westminster Presbyterian Church (400 I Street SW)

Westminster Presbyterian Church will host a free event in conjunction with our presbytery, featuring keynote and workshop leader Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, National Book Award winner and professor at American University, on “How to Be An Anti-Racist”.

This event intends to help people of goodwill reflect on the remaining reality of racism in our society through rhythm, blues, keynote, and practical exposure through experiential workshops with both African-American and white caucuses, as well as multiracial spaces, opening awareness of privilege and supremacy, and healing years of unresolved trauma.

It's a family affair! The gathering will not only be an opportunity to share stories and photos from the New Orleans mission trip, but also a chance for all of us to catch up with each other.  RSVP to Lauren Amos by Friday, September 28 with the number of family members who will attend.  Please indicate what you plan to contribute to the potluck on CCB

Sponsor a “Starter Kit” for Newly Housed Miriam’s Kitchen Guests

Mr. V moved into his own apartment last month after being homeless for 25 years in and around Capitol Hill.  He is very proud of the fact he got clean while living on the streets and has now been sober 16 years.  He cites his faith in God as what got him through, knowing that God would one day help him.  He feels that being matched to a housing voucher and moving in with the help of his case managers at Miriam’s Kitchen are an answer to his prayers.  His sister lives in Maryland and he is excited to have her over to celebrate in his new home, and now he will be able to use all his new kitchen items to cook her dinner!  He is very grateful for everything he has received.

We all need the basics when we move to a new home. For our unhoused neighbors moving into permanent supportive housing, like Mr. V.,that need is even bigger and you can help meet it. Items like cleaning supplies, dishes and silverware, bed sheets, and bath towels are no longer provided by DC government and can’t be purchased with food stamps.

Our Mission Ministry is partnering with Miriam’s Kitchen to provide “Starter Kits” with these supplies for two newly housed guests each month. You can sponsor a kit for $100, the Mission Ministry Team will do the shopping, and Miriam’s staff will deliver the items to the resident. Give online by choosing “Mission/Miriam’s Starter Kit” as your designation, or write “Starter Kit” it on your check. Organized by Cheryl Williams (cherylswilliams@verizon.net).
